Target and Nontarget Screening of PFAS in Biosolids, Composts, and Other Organic Waste Products for Land Application in France

Gabriel Munoz et al.

Summary: This study characterized the presence of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in organic waste products used in agricultural fields in France. The results showed that PFAS levels were lower in agriculture-derived wastes compared to urban and industrial wastes. Historical municipal biosolids and composts were dominated by specific PFAS, while contemporary urban waste products were dominated by zwitterionic PFAS.

The transplacental transfer efficiency of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS): a first meta-analysis

Mareike Appel et al.

Summary: This study provided comprehensive evidence on PFAS transfer rates across the human placental barrier using a meta-analysis approach. It found a curvilinear relationship with chain length and functional groups affecting transfer efficiencies. Less studied PFAS compounds like PFHxA, 6:2 FTS, and PFBA exhibited high transfer efficiencies, emphasizing the need for more research to assess potential risks for fetal exposure.

Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs) in Rivers and Drinking Waters from Qingdao, China

Guohui Lu et al.

Summary: PFASs were found in high levels in rivers, while the levels in drinking water reservoirs were relatively low in Qingdao, Eastern China. Differences in PFAS levels and composition were observed among different markets and brands of drinking water. The presence of PFASs in drinking water may not pose a serious risk to consumers in Qingdao City.

Detection and Tertiary Treatment Technologies of Poly-and Perfluoroalkyl Substances in Wastewater Treatment Plants

Rafael G. Araujo et al.

Summary: PFAS are anthropogenic chemicals used in various products, characterized by their low degradability and resistance to water, oil, and heat. They persist in the environment and accumulate in organisms, causing adverse effects. Detection and removal technologies for PFAS are of high concern. This study analyzes the mechanisms and adverse effects of PFAS, and reviews recent advances in detection and removal methods.

Phytoremediation prospects of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances: A review

Sonia Mayakaduwage et al.

Summary: The extensive use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in various industries and daily-life products has made them common contaminants in soil and water. Although several remediation strategies are available, strong ionic interactions between PFASs and soil constituents hinder the effectiveness of these technologies. Phytoremediation appears to be a potential technology for cleaning up PFAS-contaminated soils, but there are limitations in practical applications.

Poly- and Perfluoroalkyl Substances in Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants in the United States: Seasonal Patterns and Meta-Analysis of Long-Term Trends and Average Concentrations

Kyle A. Thompson et al.

Summary: This paper presents a meta-analysis that assesses the concentrations of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and their changes over time. The study found that while the concentration of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) increased, the concentration of perfluorosulfonic acid (PFOS) did not significantly change, suggesting that the sorption to sludge is offset by biotransformation of precursor compounds. The occurrence of individual PFAS may vary temporally, and the concentration of PFOA in wastewater effluent showed a decrease in some locations but appeared to increase during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, overall, the concentration of PFOA remains persistently low, with approximately 383 kg of PFOA entering the environment via WWTP effluents annually.

Remediation of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contaminated soils - To mobilize or to immobilize or to degrade?

Nanthi Bolan et al.

Summary: Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are synthetic chemicals introduced to the environment through anthropogenic activities, with major sources being firefighting foam, wastewater effluent, landfill leachate, and biosolids. Remediation of PFAS contaminated soils is challenging due to their stability and mixture complexity. Mobilizing amendments increase PFAS mobility and bioavailability, while immobilizing amendments decrease transfer to food chain and leaching to water sources. Future research should focus on quantifying potential leaching of mobilized PFAS and monitoring long-term stability of immobilized PFAS.

Challenges and Current Status of the Biological Treatment of PFAS-Contaminated Soils

Esmaeil Shahsavari et al.

Summary: This review examined the current challenge and status of bioremediation of PFAs in soils, highlighting the potential of biodegradation as a cost-effective and large-scale strategy, although limited information is available regarding the mechanisms of PFAS degradation. New technologies in microbial ecology have the potential to advance our understanding of PFAS biodegradation and support the development of robust bioremediation technologies.

Summary: The research investigated the impact of long-term land application of biosolids on PFAS presence in soils and found that biosolids and irrigation water are important sources of PFAS in soils for all study sites. Not all PFAS detected in biosolids were present in the soil, and the concentrations of long-chain PFAS decreased significantly with depth.

Summary: Biochars have been shown to effectively reduce PFAS leaching in contaminated soils. This study produced and tested eight different waste timber biochars, with varying activation levels and production methods. The results suggest that the sorption capacity of biochars is influenced by activation degree, temperature, and soil organic carbon content.
