PM-Bound Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Nitro-Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in the Ambient Air of Vladivostok: Seasonal Variation, Sources, Health Risk Assessment and Long-Term Variability

Yan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentration, sources, and long-term variation of particle PAHs and NPAHs in the atmosphere of Vladivostok, Russia. The results showed higher concentrations of PAHs and NPAHs in winter compared to summer, mainly attributed to vehicle emissions and heating systems. The assessment values indicated a significant excess cancer risk in winter, with ingestion being a main contributor. Furthermore, the concentrations of PAHs and NPAHs showed a downward trend from 1999 to 2020, largely influenced by the cogenerations project implemented in 2010.

Outdoor particulate matter exposure and upper respiratory tract infections in children and adolescents: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Myriam Ziou et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the effects of outdoor particulate matter on the risk of upper respiratory tract infections in children and adolescents. Meta-analyses showed that both PM2.5 and PM10 levels were associated with hospital presentations for URTIs. Narrative analysis found a clear association between total suspended particulates and URTIs, but mixed results were found for PM2.5 and PM10.

Determinants of personal exposure to PM2.5 and black carbon in Chinese adults: A repeated-measures study in villages using solid fuel energy

Martha Lee et al.

Summary: The study found that in settings of household solid fuel use, individual variability in exposure to air pollution is mainly dominated by differences within participants. Outdoor PM2.5 is the main variable affecting within-participant exposure, while household fuel use and smoking status explain between-participant variability. This suggests that reductions in air pollution exposure require simultaneous efforts to reduce both outdoor and indoor sources.

Yearly variation in characteristics and health risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitro-PAHs in urban shanghai from 2010-2018

Lu Yang et al.

Summary: The study conducted regular observations of PAHs and NPAHs in particulate matter in Shanghai from 2010 to 2018. It found that PAH concentrations decreased in summer in 2013 and 2017, but increased in 2015 compared to 2010, while concentrations decreased in winter over the same period. The concentrations were influenced by ambient temperature and primarily by traffic emissions.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in five East Asian cities: Seasonal characteristics, health risks, and yearly variations

Lu Yang et al.

Summary: The study found significant differences in the concentrations of PAHs and NPAHs between warm and cold seasons in East Asian cities. Traffic emissions have a major impact on air quality, with coal combustion being more pronounced in the cold season. PAHs and NPAHs from the Asian continent can influence Japanese cities, demonstrating the positive effects of air pollution control policies in China.

Environmental and biological monitoring of personal exposure to air pollutants of adult people living in a metropolitan area

Andrea Cattaneo et al.

Summary: A study was conducted to evaluate the personal exposure of adults living and working in Milan to air pollutants, with results showing that personal exposure levels were lower than previously measured in the area. Traffic variables were found to mainly drive personal exposure, while personal characteristics and smoking habits were found to mainly drive internal dose.

Characteristics and Health Risks of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Nitro-PAHs in Xinxiang, China in 2015 and 2017

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: Fine particulate matter samples from Xinxiang, China in 2015 and 2017 showed a decrease in PAH and NPAH concentrations, attributed to the implementation of air pollution control regulations in 2016. This indicates reductions in emissions and potential health risks for residents.

Acute effects of personal exposure to fine particulate matter on salivary and urinary biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress in healthy adults

Xinlei Zhu et al.

Summary: By conducting a longitudinal study among 40 healthy adults in Shanghai, China, this research found robust associations of salivary inflammatory markers (e.g., CRP, TNF-alpha) and urinary oxidative stress markers (e.g., 8-iso-PGF(2 alpha)) with short-term PM2.5 exposure. The study identified sub-daily (6-12 hours) and daily (similar to 24 hours) periods as sensitive time windows to detect the responses of salivary and urinary biomarkers, respectively.
