Stress and telomere shortening: Insights from cellular mechanisms

Jue Lin et al.

Summary: Short telomeres may increase the risk of degenerative diseases, with stress-induced telomere damage being an important pathway. The initial setting point of telomere length at birth appears to be influential, possibly affected by stress. Intergenerational stress effects on telomeres include prenatal stress and direct inheritance of short telomeres.

Summary: This review summarises the evidence from literature regarding the association of mitochondrial DNA copy numbers and semen quality, with a particular focus on sperm motility. The findings suggest that abnormal semen analysis is associated with significantly higher mitochondrial DNA copy numbers in human sperm cells.

Effects of age and oligoasthenozoospermia on telomeres of sperm and blood cells

Carlos Balmori et al.

Summary: The study found that sperm telomere length increases with age in individuals with normal sperm, but this trend is not observed in individuals with oligoasthenozoospermia (OAZ). In blood, younger individuals with OAZ have significantly shorter telomere length, which could be a useful biomarker for OAZ in younger patients.

Lung mitochondrial DNA copy number, inflammatory biomarkers, gene transcription and gene methylation in vapers and smokers

Kellie M. Mori et al.

Summary: This study found that smoking may cause lung toxic effects through mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtCN). While the impact of electronic cigarettes (EC) is less clear, the presence of EC-specific associations of mtCN with nuclear biomarkers suggests that exposure may not be harmless. Further research is needed to understand the role of smoking and EC-related mtCN in lung disease risks.

Summary: Low birth weight is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The study found an additive interaction between low birth weight and unhealthy lifestyles in relation to the risk of coronary heart disease among women, with unhealthy lifestyle contributing more to the risk than low birth weight alone. Additionally, low birth weight is associated with a greater risk of stroke among women.

Male infertility

Ashok Agarwal et al.

Summary: Infertility affects 8-12% of couples globally, with male factors contributing to around 50%. The causes of male infertility are diverse, requiring thorough evaluation to identify treatable or reversible factors. Semen analysis is key for evaluation, while advanced tests have been developed to investigate sperm quality and function.

Mitochondria: their role in spermatozoa and in male infertility

Magalie Boguenet et al.

Summary: Mitochondria in sperm play essential roles in energy production, redox equilibrium, calcium regulation, and apoptotic pathways, which are crucial for sperm motility, capacitation, acrosome reaction, and gametic fusion. Alterations in mitochondrial functions can lead to decline in sperm quality and fertility, while the relationship between mitochondrial genome and sperm quality is complex and heterogeneous. Understanding the role of mitochondria in male infertility is of great importance in the context of declining sperm quality.

The effect of SiNPs on DNA methylation of genome in mouse spermatocytes

Yujian Sang et al.

Summary: This study revealed that SiNPs caused extensive methylation changes in the genome of GC-2 cells, identifying 428 hyper-methylated genes and 398 hypo-methylated genes. Gene Ontology and pathway analysis showed that differential DNA methylation induced by SiNPs was probably involved with abnormal transcription and translation, mitochondrial damage, and cell apoptosis.
