Future changes of hot extremes in Spain: towards warmer conditions

M. N. Lorenzo et al.

Summary: One of the most important effects of climate change is its impact on the frequency and intensity of extreme events. This study investigates changes in extreme hot temperature events over Spain in the near future and finds a significant increase in the number of extremely warm temperatures, warm days, and warm nights.

Recent Trends in Heat-Related Mortality in the United States: An Update through 2018

Scott C. Sheridan et al.

Summary: In the past decade, there has been heterogeneity in heat-related mortality trends in the United States, with a continuing decrease in heat vulnerability among those aged 65 and older, but an increase in mortality among men aged 45-64. Broadly identifying the elderly as the most vulnerable group in heat-warning messaging may play a role in these differences in risk perception.

Heatwave intensity on the Iberian Peninsula: Future climate projections

Nieves Lorenzo et al.

Summary: Heatwave projections for the Iberian Peninsula show a general significant increase in intensity, frequency, duration, and spatial extent, particularly in the eastern-central region and on the Mediterranean coast. As climate change continues, the impacts of heatwaves are predicted to intensify further.

Summary: This study examined the impact of heatwaves on emergency department (ED) presentations and costs in Adelaide, South Australia during the warm seasons of 2014-2017. The results showed that heatwaves significantly increased ED presentations and costs, with tailored interventions for vulnerable populations suggested to reduce the health impacts and cost burden.
