Occurrence, removal, and mass balance of contaminants of emerging concern in biological nutrient removal-based sewage treatment plants: Role of redox conditions in biotransformation and sorption

Monika Dubey et al.

Summary: The study found that high removal efficiencies of certain CECs were observed in two wastewater treatment plants, but there were still significant amounts of targeted contaminants discharged through wastewater and sludge. Additionally, the research highlighted the influence of redox conditions on both biodegradation and sorption mechanisms, emphasizing the importance of different redox conditions for optimal removal of CECs.

Diclofenac removal from the wastewater using activated sludge and analysis of multidrug resistant bacteria from the sludge

Mohamed S. Elshikh et al.

Summary: Factors affecting the adsorption of diclofenac on sewage sludge were evaluated in this study. Over 80% diclofenac was removed at an initial concentration of 1 mg/L. Adsorption increased at higher concentrations, and more than 99% of diclofenac was adsorbed at a concentration of 100 mg/L. Significant removal of diclofenac was observed after 5 minutes of contact time, and the adsorption efficacy was over 98% after 50 and 60 minutes. The results of pseudo-first and second order kinetics showed a reasonable regression value, indicating a good fit for the model. Diclofenac adsorption was more effective at acidic pH levels than alkaline levels. The sludge samples contained multi-drug resistant bacteria, including vancomycin-resistant entemcoccus stains, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus positive strains, and extended-spectrum betal-lactamaseharbouring Entembacteriacea. Klebsiella pneumoniae, E. coli, and Enterobacter were among the drug-resistant Entembacteriaceae strains found. In conclusion, activated sludge can effectively be used for the removal of diclofenac from wastewater.

Unraveling the Toxicity Associated with Ciprofloxacin Biodegradation in Biological Wastewater Treatment

Huiqun Zhang et al.

Summary: Incomplete mineralization of antibiotics in biological sludge systems presents a risk to the environment. This study explored the toxicity of ciprofloxacin (CIP) biodegradation in different sludge systems and found that the sulfur-mediated sludge system exhibited high tolerance and excellent pollutant removal. However, the biodegradation of CIP did not completely eliminate its toxicity in all systems. Anaerobic systems were more effective at CIP biodegradation and reduced the antibacterial activity of CIP and its transformation products.

Occurrence, seasonal variations, and ecological risk of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in River Ganges at two holy cities of India

Vineet Singh et al.

Summary: The study in the urban stretch of River Ganges in two holy cities in India found the presence of 15 different pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) with seasonal variations. The concentrations of PPCPs in the river varied, with higher levels observed in the anthropogenically influenced lower reaches at Haridwar, and overall higher concentrations in winter compared to summer. Various PPCPs showed high detection frequency in the river, with different classes of substances exhibiting different patterns of concentration variation between seasons.

Occurrence and removal of 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) in municipal wastewater treatment plants: Current status and challenges

Zhao Tang et al.

Summary: This study critically reviewed the occurrence and removal of 17 alpha-ethynylestradiol (EE2) in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The results showed that the concentration of EE2 in municipal wastewater was generally higher than the reported lowest-observed-effect concentration, indicating an urgent need for EE2 removal in WWTPs.

Profiling of emerging contaminants and antibiotic resistance in sewage treatment plants: An Indian perspective

Priyam Saxena et al.

Summary: This study presents a quantitative contamination profiling of selected PPCPs and antibiotic resistance in untreated and biologically-treated sewage from different sewage treatment plants in India. The presence of PPCPs in both untreated and treated samples was detected, while a reduction in antibiotic resistant bacteria was observed in treated sewage.

Fate of pharmaceutically active compounds in a pilot-scale A2O integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) process treating municipal wastewater

M. J. Gallardo-Altamirano et al.

Summary: The study investigated the operation of an A2O-IFAS system for removing emerging pollutants, particularly pharmaceutical compounds. Results showed that the A2O-IFAS system achieved similar or higher removal efficiency for organic matter and nutrients compared to conventional systems, even with low sludge retention time and mixed liquor suspended solid. The system demonstrated promising removal rates for certain pharmaceutical compounds, indicating its potential as a cost-effective upgrade for wastewater treatment plants.
