Exposure to phthalates and female reproductive health: A literature review

Carla Giovana Basso et al.

Summary: Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are exogenous compounds known for their ability to interfere with hormone action and affect the development and function of male and female reproductive systems. Among EDCs, phthalate esters have attracted special attention due to their widespread exposure and potential disruption of male androgen-dependent development. Recent research suggests that phthalates may also negatively impact female reproductive health, including ovarian and uterine functions.

Prenatal exposure to phthalates and its effects upon cognitive and motor functions: A systematic review

Maria Isabel Martinez-Martinez et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that maternal exposure to phthalates during pregnancy can affect the cognitive and motor development of babies, especially in boys. While most studies found inverse relationships between maternal urinary phthalate concentration and children's outcomes, not all associations were significant, with even positive associations, especially in the third trimester. Further research is needed to analyze sex differences and the impact during breastfeeding.

Associations of Prenatal Exposure to Phthalates with Measures of Cognition in 4.5-Month-Old Infants

Francheska M. Merced-Nieves et al.

Summary: The study found a gender difference in the association between prenatal phthalate exposure and infants' physical reasoning. For female infants, the exposure was associated with increased viewing time of events they couldn't comprehend, while for male infants, higher exposure was linked to increased viewing time of events they could understand.

Summary: The study evaluated the relationship between prenatal phthalate exposure and preschool-aged children's executive function (EF), finding that children exposed to MBzP, MiBP, and MnBP during pregnancy exhibited poorer EF profiles across a range of instruments and raters, with more pronounced effects in boys.

Urinary phthalate metabolites and alternatives and serum sex steroid hormones among pre- and postmenopausal women from NHANES, 2013-16

Sara E. Long et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association between phthalate metabolites and sex hormone concentrations in women, finding that DEHP was associated with lower estradiol and bioavailable testosterone concentrations in postmenopausal women, while DINCH was associated with higher free testosterone, bioavailable testosterone, and free androgen index. DEHTP was associated with a higher testosterone-to-estradiol ratio. Further research is needed to explore the safety of these chemicals.
