Ecotoxicological risk assessment for sediments of cavuslu stream in Giresun, Turkey: association between garbage disposal facility and metallic accumulation

Bayram Yuksel et al.

Summary: This paper aimed to investigate the potential accumulation of toxic elements in the surface sediments of cavuslu Stream in Giresun, Turkey, and determine any association between a garbage disposal facility and ecotoxicity or human health risk. Results showed that certain metals in the sediments were above average shale levels, indicating potential toxic responses in benthic organisms. Multivariate statistical analysis suggested that anthropogenic pollution, likely from the GDF, played a major role in the metal accumulation in the sediments of the cavuslu Stream.

Probabilistic risk assessment of heavy metals in urban farmland soils of a typical oasis city in northwest China

Qingyu Guan et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively evaluated the ecological and human health risks of soil heavy metals by collecting soil samples from a typical oasis city in northwest China. The results showed that anthropogenic activities have influenced the accumulation of heavy metals in the area, but the risk of contamination was characterized as light to moderate and low ecological risk. The study also found that the current soil environmental quality standards in China are not effective in protecting species diversity. Furthermore, the probability of carcinogenic risk of certain heavy metals was found to be high, while the non-carcinogenic risk was low.

Respiratory bioaccessibility and solid phase partitioning of potentially harmful elements in urban environmental matrices

Alexys Giorgia Friol Boim et al.

Summary: Research on the role of geochemical processes in urban environmental matrices (UEM) and their impact on human respiratory bioaccessibility is limited in humid tropical regions, especially in Brazil. This study found that contaminated UEM left by former mining industries in Brazil can be hazardous to humans, with respiratory bioaccessibility being related to particle geochemistry and mineralogy.

Summary: This study identified slight pollution of toxic elements in soils in the Beihu area of Wuhan City, with some vegetables exceeding standard limits. Health risk assessment revealed that controlling soil exposure to arsenic and consumption of vegetables are the top priorities for risk intervention.

Occurrence and health risks of heavy metals in plastic-shed soils and vegetables across China

Jian Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that the average concentrations of eight heavy metals in plastic-shed soils in China were higher than those in adjacent open-field agricultural soils, especially cadmium, which exceeded its maximum limit and had the highest average geo-accumulation index of 1.21. Long-term plastic-shed vegetable production can lead to soil acidification and higher accumulation of heavy metals in the soil. Visible accumulation of heavy metals has also occurred in vegetables grown in plastic-shed areas, especially leafy vegetables. Health risk assessment showed that consuming leafy vegetables grown in plastic sheds could pose a cancer risk that should be taken seriously.

Health risk assessment in urban parks soils contaminated by metals, Rio Grande city (Brazil) case study

Julia Oliveira Penteado et al.

Summary: The urban parks in Rio Grande city are contaminated both historically and presently, with high non-carcinogenic risks of Hg and Pb. The contamination is mainly linked to textile activities from the 18th century, urbanization, and industrialization, posing potential threats to the health of children who frequently use these public spaces.

Health risk assessment of potentially toxic elements in the dry deposition fraction of settleable particulate matter in urban and suburban locations in the city of Gijon, Spain

Rosa Lara et al.

Summary: This study investigated the human health risk of metals/metalloids in the dry deposition fraction of settleable particulate matter in two sites in a coastal city in northern Spain. The main exposure pathway for residents was ingestion, and while levels were acceptable for adults, children showed higher levels of hazard indexes and carcinogenic risks for some elements. More research is needed to fully understand the impact of metals/metalloids in DSPM on human health.
