Sources and composition of chemical pollution in Maritime Antarctica (King George Island), part 1: Sediment and water analysis for PAH sources evaluation in the vicinity of Arctowski station

Joanna Potapowicz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of PAHs in fresh waters and surface sediments on the western shore of Admiralty Bay over several sampling seasons. The results showed that biomass combustion and coal were the main sources of PAHs, with a limited contribution from petroleum sources. The study also indicated a minimal role of long-range atmospheric transport from South America in PAH pollution, with local activities being more closely associated with PAH contamination.

Global Trends and Drivers in Consumption- and Income-Based Emissions of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Ruifei Li et al.

Summary: Although emissions based on production, consumption, and income were decreasing in most regions, the international trade still transferred a significant amount of PAH emissions globally. From the consumption and income perspectives, sub-Saharan Africa surpassed China as the largest net exporter of emissions, while India and the rest of Asia saw significant increases in net income-based outflows of emissions.

Black carbon footprint of human presence in Antarctica

Raul R. Cordero et al.

Summary: The snow surrounding research facilities and shore tourist-landing sites in Antarctica is darker than elsewhere in the continent, indicating that local emissions of black carbon are accelerating seasonal snowmelt. The black carbon footprint from research activities and tourism in Antarctica has likely increased, resulting in accelerated snow melting on the Antarctic Peninsula and associated archipelagos.

Legacy and emerging organic contaminants in the polar regions

Zhiyong Xie et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the occurrence and transport processes of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) and legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in polar regions. It highlights the differences between the Arctic and Antarctica, and the potential effects of remobilization on pollutant concentrations.

Occurrence, distribution, and bioaccumulation of new and legacy persistent organic pollutants in an ecosystem on King George Island, maritime Antarctica

Jun-Tae Kim et al.

Summary: The study investigates the occurrence and bioaccumulation of new and legacy POPs in an ecosystem on King George Island, Antarctica. Results show that both new and legacy POPs were widely detected in animal samples, with some being magnified through the food web and others being diluted through the trophic levels.

First evaluation of wastewater discharge influence on marine water contamination in the vicinity of Arctowski Station (Maritime Antarctica)

Malgorzata Szopinska et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of wastewater generated during scientific research and logistics in Antarctica on the marine environment. The presence of trace metals and surfactants in the wastewater indicated potential anthropogenic influence on seawater. Proper wastewater treatment is essential to reduce the impact on marine organisms.

Sources and composition of chemical pollution in Maritime Antarctica (King George Island), part 2: Organic and inorganic chemicals in snow cover at the Warszawa Icefield

Danuta Szuminska et al.

Summary: The study comprehensively analyzed the inorganic and organic chemistry of snow cover in King George Island, finding low pollutant concentrations in collected snow samples. A slight increase in pollutant concentrations was observed at the marginal parts of the icefield, possibly due to the influence of scientific stations.

Accumulation and influencing factors of novel brominated flame retardants in soil and vegetation from Fildes Peninsula, Antarctica

Siyuan Xiong et al.

Summary: The study found that the concentrations of NBFRs in plant samples were higher than those in soil samples, possibly due to plant bioaccumulation. Additionally, the concentrations of certain NBFRs in Antarctic soil and moss may be affected by TOC in soil and lipid content in mosses.

Dissolved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from the Northwestern Pacific to the Southern Ocean: Surface seawater distribution, source apportionment, and air-seawater exchange

Xue Zhang et al.

Summary: PAH concentrations in seawater vary in different ocean regions, with three-ringed PAHs dominating the composition. Levels of PAHs in the Pacific and Indian Oceans show a strong correlation with salinity and distance to the coastline. Air-seawater fugacity ratios indicate net fluxes of PAHs from seawater to air in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, while the Southern Ocean shows a net flow of PAHs from air to seawater. Source apportionment analysis suggests that petrogenic sources and coal/wood combustion have the largest contributions to total PAHs. Higher contributions from petrogenic sources are found at sites near coastal regions.
