Soil heavy metal pollution from Pb/Zn smelting regions in China and the remediation potential of biomineralization

Xinghua Luo et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the heavy metal pollution in soils caused by Pb/Zn smelting in China in the past 10 years, and highlights the urgent need for remediation due to the extreme toxicity. The study investigates the primary anthropogenic activities contributing to soil pollution in smelting areas, as well as the potential of biomineralization and several optimization methods for remediation.

Arsenic Transformation in Soil-Rice System Affected by Iron-Oxidizing Strain (Ochrobactrum sp.) and Related Soil Metabolomics Analysis

Ziyan Qian et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential application of iron-oxidizing bacteria (FeOB) in the remediation of arsenic (As) pollution in paddy soils. Inoculation of FeOB reduces the bioavailability of As in paddy soils, decreases As accumulation in rice tissues, and enhances the resistance of the soil to peroxide pollution caused by As. Additionally, FeOB inoculation alters the microbial community structure and soil metabolism, promoting the biotransformation process of As in the soil.

Remediation of arsenic-contaminated paddy field by a new iron oxidizing strain (Ochrobactrum sp.) and iron-modified biochar

Kaikai Wu et al.

Summary: Iron-oxidizing strains and iron modified biochars have the potential to remediate arsenic-contaminated environments by reducing arsenic concentrations in soil, pore water, and rice grains. The combination treatment of iron modified biochar, iron-oxidizing strains, and nitrogen fertilizer showed the highest effectiveness in arsenic remediation.

Electron shuttle-induced oxidative transformation of arsenite on the surface of goethite and underlying mechanisms

Kai Liu et al.

Summary: Under aerobic conditions, cysteine significantly enhances the oxidation efficiency of As(III) on goethite by inducing Fe(III) reduction and forming Fe(II) species, which play a key role in As(III) oxidation. The oxidation efficiency of As(III) increases with higher cysteine concentration but decreases with elevated pH. O-2(-) radicals account for approximately 80% of total oxidized As(III), while only 16% can be attributed to OH radicals. This study provides new insights into the impact of organic electron shuttling compounds on As cycling in soils.

Spatial distribution of toxic metal(loid)s at an abandoned zinc smelting site, Southern China.

Jiaqing Zeng et al.

Summary: A comprehensive study was conducted on an abandoned zinc smelting site in Southern China to determine contamination characteristics and spatial distribution patterns of toxic metal(loid)s in soils. The study found that soil environmental quality was seriously threatened by Cd, Zn, As, Pb, and Hg contaminants, with strong spatial heterogeneity in their distribution. The study also showed that the pollutants mainly concentrated in fill layers, with different contaminants exhibiting varying migration depths and spatial variability.

Geochemical partitioning and spatial distribution of heavy metals in soils contaminated by lead smelting*

Wenshun Ke et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial distribution and geochemical partitioning of heavy metals (HMs) in soil samples from an abandoned lead smelting site. The results showed that As, Pb and Cd posed serious threats to soil quality with high spatial heterogeneity. The study also identified the major mineral hosts for HMs and found that quartz, montmorillonite, and goethite were closely associated with HMs minerals in contaminated soils, limiting their vertical migration and potential risks to groundwater.

Changes in the microbial community during microbial microaerophilic Fe(II) oxidation at circumneutral pH enriched from paddy soil

Hui Tong et al.

Summary: Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria play a crucial role in iron cycling in various environments, but their distribution and diversity in flooded paddy soils have been less studied. This research investigates the microbial structure and diversity of microaerophilic Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria in iron-rich paddy soils through enrichment experiments. The study found that the Fe(II) oxidation rate decreased with increased transfers, with certain bacterial phyla becoming dominant, suggesting the involvement of other bacterial species in the Fe(II)-oxidizing process.

Arsenic biomineralization by iron oxidizing strain (Ochrobactrum sp.) isolated from a paddy soil in Hunan, China

Xinghua Luo et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that Fe oxidizing bacteria (FeOB) have the ability to enhance arsenic (As) immobilization and mineralization in soil, leading to a decrease in available As content. Additionally, Fe(II) facilitated the reduction of NO3- while inhibiting the reduction of NO2-. The addition of 2% or more bacteria significantly reduced aqueous As content and resulted in the formation of As-containing minerals (angelellite, loellingite).

Influence of alternate wetting and drying water-saving irrigation practice on the dynamics of Gallionella-related iron-oxidizing bacterial community in paddy field soil

Takeshi Watanabe et al.

Summary: The study investigated the influence of alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation on the dynamics of Gallionella-related FeOB in paddy field soil over three seasons of rice cultivation. The AWD irrigation reduced Fe(II) contents in the soil and increased the copy numbers of 16S rRNA genes of Gallionella-related FeOB. The fluctuation of the redox status of Fe caused by AWD irrigation led to changes in the community structure of Gallionella-related FeOB in the soil.

Variations in root morphological indices of rice (Oryza sativa L.) induced by seedling establishment methods and their relation to arsenic accumulation in plant tissues

Xiao Deng et al.

Summary: The establishment method of rice seedlings significantly affects the accumulation of arsenic (As) in rice tissues. Direct seeding (DS) results in greater As accumulation in aboveground tissues and significantly affects the total As concentration and uptake in rice compared to other establishment methods. Root tips play a key role in determining the difference in As accumulation in rice roots under different seedling establishment methods.
