Migration processes of radioactive cesium in the Fukushima nearshore area: Impacts of riverine input and resuspension

Toshiharu Misonou et al.

Summary: It is crucial to evaluate secondary migration caused by riverine input and resuspension from seabed sediments in order to estimate the future distribution of radioactive cesium in the coastal area off Fukushima Prefecture. The study found that resuspension is the main cause of 79%-83% of secondary 137Cs migration in nearshore areas, while riverine input contributes only 7% per year to sediment.

Distributions and impacts of plutonium in the environment originating from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident: An overview of a decade of studies

Junwen Wu et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the knowledge on plutonium isotopic composition and activity concentrations resulting from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. The study reveals the characteristic values and spatial distributions of plutonium in the area. It is clarified that the contamination is restricted to a terrestrial area, while plutonium in the Northwest Pacific Ocean comes from other sources. The findings provide valuable information for future environmental risk assessment and geochemical studies.

Summary: This paper summarizes major lessons learned from the environmental investigations of the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, emphasizing the interdisciplinary nature of environmental radioactivity research and the importance of chemical studies on the transfer of radiocesium released from FDNPP. The paper also discusses future trends in the study of anthropogenic radionuclide behavior in the environment and its significance for environmental protection.

Factors affecting 137Cs concentrations in river water under base-flow conditions near the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant

Takahiro Nakanishi et al.

Summary: The study found that the Cs-137 concentration in river water after the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident was closely related to the mean Cs-137 deposition in the catchment and the Cs-137 deposition ratio for forests. Additionally, Cs-137 concentrations near the FDNPP increased due to inflow from downstream plain areas.

Radionuclide contamination in flood sediment deposits in the coastal rivers draining the main radioactive pollution plume of Fukushima Prefecture, Japan (2011-2020)

Olivier Evrard et al.

Summary: A study compiled data on gamma-emitting artificial radionuclide activities measured in 782 sediment samples collected during 16 fieldwork campaigns in Japan from November 2011 to November 2020. This dataset may help in evaluating and anticipating the post-accidental redistribution of radionuclides in the environment and validating models simulating the transfer of radiocesium across continental landscapes.
