Uptake of perfluoroalkyl substances, pharmaceuticals, and parabens by oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) and exposure risk in human consumption

Oksana Golovko et al.

Summary: Organic micropollutants pose potential threats to environmental ecosystems and human health. This study investigated the uptake of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), pharmaceuticals, and paraben by edible oyster mushrooms. The results showed a negative correlation between PFAS uptake and perfluorocarbon chain length. The presence of micropollutants had an impact on fungal colonization but did not affect the production of fruiting bodies in oyster mushrooms. The potential human risk from ingestion of micropollutants was evaluated based on acceptable daily intake (ADI).

Identifying potential paraben transformation products and evaluating changes in toxicity as a result of transformation

Michael T. Penrose et al.

Summary: Parabens, widely used as preservatives, have been found to have estrogenic and other adverse effects. Wastewater treatment processes effectively transform parabens, with the resulting transformation products having higher concentrations. Chlorinated transformation products have been identified as estrogen receptor antagonists.

Organic micropollutants, heavy metals and pathogens in anaerobic digestate based on food waste

Oksana Golovko et al.

Summary: This study examined the characteristics of anaerobic digestate based on food waste from three biogas plants in Sweden, including heavy metals, chemicals of emerging concern, and food-borne pathogens. The results showed that the concentrations of bacteria and heavy metals in the anaerobic digestate were below the maximum accepted levels, but spore-forming Bacillus cereus was present at high levels. The biofertilizers from different biogas plants had similar chemical profiles, which could help regulators establish priority lists of chemicals of top concern. Risk estimation indicated low environmental risks associated with the application of biofertilizers for food crop production.

Reclaimed water in agriculture: A plot-scale study assessing crop uptake of emerging contaminants and pathogens

Adria Sunyer-Caldu et al.

Summary: Water management is crucial as demand for agricultural, urban, and industrial purposes increases. The use of reclaimed water in agriculture can be a suitable solution, but pathogens and chemical contaminants present in reclaimed water can accumulate in soil and crops. This study evaluated the influence of water quality, soil composition, and irrigation system on plant uptake of contaminants and pathogens, and found that the best combination to reduce these transfers was the use of reclaimed water, soils with high clay content, and a sprinkling irrigation system.

Extending the knowledge about PFAS bioaccumulation factors for agricultural plants - A review

Lukas Lesmeister et al.

Summary: The main source of PFASs in agricultural plants is their uptake from contaminated soil. A comprehensive review of >4500 soil-to-plant BAFs for 45 PFASs from 24 studies involving 27 genera of agricultural crops revealed that factors such as plant growth stage and type can significantly affect the transfer of PFASs, and the number of perfluorinated carbons absorbed by plants can impact the levels of BAFs.

Uptake and translocation of perfluoroalkyl acids with different carbon chain lengths (C2-C8) in wheat (Triticum acstivnm L.) under the effect of copper exposure

Lu Zhang et al.

Summary: The co-contamination of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) and heavy metals (HMs) in surface environments impacted by sewage irrigation and sludge application is common. This study found that the presence of copper (Cu) affects the root uptake and acropetal translocation behaviors of C2-C8 PFAAs in wheat. While short-chain PFAAs exhibited decreased translocation to the shoot, long-chain PFAAs saw enhanced acropetal translocation under Cu exposure.

Uptake and translocation of multiresidue industrial and household contaminants in radish grown under controlled conditions

Concepcion Abril et al.

Summary: The study found that degradation rates of some pollutants in soil adhered to radish roots were higher than in soil, and the compounds with the highest bioconcentration factors (BCF) were perfluorinated compounds and AS-C12. Non-ionic compounds, except TCB, were mainly accumulated in bulbs, while phenolic compounds were detected at lower concentration levels.

Summary: This study developed a novel suspect screening approach to explore the presence of pesticides and their transformation products in the environment, successfully confirming multiple pesticide TPs. Integration of national monitoring data increased the number of prioritized compounds, and the presence of some TPs highlighted concerns related to environmental impacts.

Development of a QuEChERS-based method for the analysis of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in lettuces grown in field-scale agricultural plots irrigated with reclaimed water

Adria Sunyer-Caldu et al.

Summary: The use of reclaimed water for agricultural irrigation is becoming more common, but the detection and control of pollutants in reclaimed water are becoming increasingly important. A study on personal care products and pharmaceutical residues in vegetables irrigated with reclaimed water showed that a simple analytical method demonstrated good results and sensitivity.
