Interactions between anthropogenic pollutants (biodegradable organic nitrogen and ammonia) and the primary hydrogeochemical component Mn in groundwater: Evidence from three polluted sites

Yuanzheng Zhai et al.

Summary: This study examined the long-term impact of anthropogenic pollutants such as organic nitrogen and ammonia on groundwater quality and component concentrations. Results showed that wastewater discharge altered the hydrogeochemical component concentrations, shifting inorganic nitrogen species from nitrate to ammonia and increasing manganese concentrations. The complex interaction between manganese and nitrogen species complicates the transformation of nitrogen components in groundwater.

Characterize groundwater vulnerability to intensive groundwater exploitation using tritium time-series and hydrochemical data in Shijiazhuang, North China Plain

Zhongshuang Cheng et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the deterioration of water quality in shallow groundwater systems is mainly influenced by groundwater vulnerability and its changes. Different distributions of groundwater MRTs and ion concentrations were observed in the shallow aquifer, indicating spatial variations. High concentrations of ions were mainly found in the western piedmont plain areas, suggesting susceptibility to human activities.

Sources and transformation mechanisms of inorganic nitrogen: Evidence from multi-isotopes in a rural-urban river area

Huijun Ye et al.

Summary: The application of multi-isotope tracers quantitatively revealed the sources and transformation mechanisms of inorganic nitrogen in a complex land use area in China, showing seasonal and spatial differences in contributions and transformation mechanisms. While nitrate nitrogen in rural areas mainly came from nitrogen fertilizer application and soil nitrogen, urban areas were influenced by soil nitrogen, manure and sewage, and industrial wastewater, with different contributions in varying seasons and locations.

Elevated Fe and Mn Concentrations in Groundwater in the Songnen Plain, Northeast China, and the Factors and Mechanisms Involved

Yuanzheng Zhai et al.

Summary: The study found that the concentrations of Fe and Mn in groundwater in the Songnen Plain were significantly correlated with climate parameters, surface features, and hydrogeochemical characteristics. The main reasons for the elevated concentrations were identified as mineral-rich strata and soil containing abundant organic matter acting as sources of Fe and Mn, and the reductive environment promoting their dissolution in groundwater.Pollutants from agricultural activities were also found to contribute to the increase in Fe and Mn concentrations in groundwater.
