Preliminary results on the occurrence and anatomical distribution of microplastics in wild populations of Nephrops norvegicus from the Adriatic Sea

Michela Martinelli et al.

Summary: This study identified microplastics (MPs) in different anatomical compartments of Norway lobsters, with fragments being more concentrated in the hepatopancreas and fibers more in the gut. The predominant polymers were polyester, polyamide 6, polyvinyl chloride, and polyethylene. The size of MPs influenced their anatomical distribution, and there were no significant differences between individuals from different sampling sites. Individual sex did not affect the level of retained MPs.

Sinking characteristics of microplastics in the marine environment

Katerina Karkanorachaki et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution is a global issue, and the vertical transfer process is crucial for modeling the fate of plastics and microplastics in the marine environment. Experimental results show that density, fouling, and sample form significantly affect the sinking characteristics of polymers.

Microplastic Spectral Classification Needs an Open Source Community: Open Specy to the Rescue!

Win Cowger et al.

Summary: Open Specy is a free software solution for spectral classification, offering users the ability to view, process, identify, and share microplastic spectra. It stands out as the only open source software with a community library, and provides a range of tools for spectrum processing to build a diverse reference library for microplastics.

Elements of toxicological concern and the arsenolipids' profile in the giant-red Mediterranean shrimp, Aristaeomorpha foliacea

Georgia Soultani et al.

Summary: The study found that lead and cadmium levels were higher in the cephalothorax than in the muscle of the giant red Mediterranean shrimp, while mercury was more concentrated in the muscle. The concentrations of cadmium, lead, and mercury in the edible tissue were below the maximum levels set by the European Union for contaminants in food. The Se:Hg molar ratio was higher than the recommended level, and arsenic levels were significantly higher compared to the other elements in the shrimp.

Nutritional Quality of the European Spiny Lobster Palinurus elephas (J.C. Fabricius, 1787) (Achelata, Palinuridae) and the Non-Indigenous Northern Brown Shrimp Penaeus aztecus Ives, 1891 (Dendrobranchiata, Penaeidae)

Thodoros E. Kampouris et al.

Summary: The European spiny lobster and northern brown shrimp are important commercial species in the Mediterranean region. However, their proximate composition and fatty acid profile show significant differences, with the northern brown shrimp having higher protein, fat, and energy contents, while the European spiny lobster has higher moisture and ash contents.
