Development and Assessment of a High-Resolution Biogenic Emission Inventory from Urban Green Spaces in China

Mingchen Ma et al.

Summary: BVOC emissions from urban green spaces, known as U-BVOC emissions, have been largely ignored due to low-resolution land cover data. With a new high-resolution dataset, it is now possible to evaluate their significant role in urban environments, especially in megacities. The newly constructed U-BVOC emission inventory provides an improved dataset for studying the modulation of BVOCs on ozone, SOA, and atmospheric chemistry in urban areas.

Characterizing the distinct modulation of future emissions on summer ozone concentrations between urban and rural areas over China

Xinran Zeng et al.

Summary: Previous studies have primarily focused on ozone pollution on a large regional scale and have paid less attention to the differences between urban and surrounding suburban-rural areas. This study compared the evolution of ozone concentrations in urban and suburban-rural areas using the CMAQ model and WRF model in China. The findings indicate that current ozone concentrations are higher in suburban-rural areas compared to urban areas. However, projections suggest that ozone concentrations in suburban-rural areas may decrease more than in urban areas in the future under scenarios of anthropogenic emissions reduction.

Impacts of biogenic emissions from urban landscapes on summer ozone an secondary organic aerosol formation in megacities

Yang Gao et al.

Summary: The impact of biogenic emissions from urban landscapes on ozone and SOA has been largely ignored. Including urban isoprene in the model improves the simulations of isoprene concentrations and its diurnal cycle. Urban BVOC emissions play vital roles in modulating ozone formation and will become more important in the future. Biogenic-induced SOA accounts for 16% of total SOA in urban areas.

Spatial and temporal variations of open straw burning based on fire spots in northeast China from 2013 to 2017

Song Cui et al.

Summary: The study revealed that open straw burning is a significant source of atmospheric pollutants in northeast China, particularly impacting PM2.5 concentrations. The main burning areas are located in Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning provinces, with high straw yield, mainly from corn straw.

Model vs. observation discrepancy in aerosol characteristics during a half-year long campaign in Northeast China: The role of biomass burning

Yuan Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution in Harbin during the heating season, finding that the model significantly underpredicted open burning emissions and organic carbon, while overestimating vehicle emissions. The impact of levoglucosan concentration on nitrate simulation was pronounced, showing a transition from negative to positive values with increasing levoglucosan. Open burning had a significant influence on nitrate and sulfate formation.

Assessment of biomass-burning types and transport over Thailand and the associated health risks

Praphatsorn Punsompong et al.

Summary: According to the study, different regions in Thailand are affected by different types of BB, leading to varying levels of PM2.5 pollution, with forest fires being the main source of pollution. Analysis of PM2.5 exposure shows that around 79% of the population in Thailand is affected by very unhealthy and hazardous PM2.5-AQI levels.

Revealing the modulation of boundary conditions and governing processes on ozone formation over northern China in June 2017

Feifan Yan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of different boundary conditions on the vertical distribution of ozone over urban Beijing. The global chemical transport model provided more reasonable performance compared to clean and static boundary conditions. Dynamic emission control strategies were proposed to reduce ozone concentration during pollution periods, showing significant efficacy when considering both accumulation and transport effects.

Summary: Land cover (LC) plays a crucial role in energy exchange and environmental impact. Rapid changes in land cover in China necessitate fine-scale monitoring. A new dataset, CLCD, based on Landsat data on the Google Earth Engine platform provides valuable insights into China's land cover dynamics from 1990 to 2019.

Summary: The CMAQ model version 5.3, released in August 2019, features significant updates in science, functionality, and computation efficiency compared to version 5.2.1. Major advances in the new model include enhanced aerosol, chlorine, bromine, and iodine chemistry, as well as updated deposition models. In addition, support for the WRF model's hybrid vertical coordinate was added. Evaluations of CMAQ531 show differences in O-3 and PM2:5 values compared to CMAQ521.
