The influence of demographic and lifestyle factors on urinary levels of PAH metabolites-empirical analyses of Cycle 2 (2009-2011) CHMS data

Jennifer L. A. Keir et al.

Summary: Urinary concentrations of PAH metabolites are associated with smoking status, age, and sex, and are influenced by demographic factors in non-smokers such as age, sex, home age, and occupation. The unexplained variation in PAH metabolite levels is likely related to diet. The results can be used to identify remedial measures and design follow-up studies to test hypotheses related to exposure differences empirically.

Variability in urinary biomarkers of human exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and its association with oxidative stress

Hongkai Zhu et al.

Summary: The study found that metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were widely present in urine, with significant inter-individual variability in some metabolites' concentrations, showing association with oxidative stress. Linear mixed-effects analysis revealed a positive correlation between OH-PAH concentrations and oxidative damage to DNA, lipids, and proteins.

Decreasing temporal trends of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in adipose tissue from residents near a hazardous waste incinerator

Francisco Garcia et al.

Summary: The study found that the content of PCDD/Fs in adipose tissue of individuals living near a hazardous waste incinerator in Constanti, Spain has significantly decreased, in line with a decreasing trend in dietary intake of PCDD/Fs. The body burdens of PCDD/Fs were strongly correlated with age, indicating that older individuals are more affected.

Biomonitoring of the adult population living near the waste incinerator of Turin: Serum concentrations of PCDDs, PCDFs, and PCBs after three years from the plant start-up

A. L. Iamiceli et al.

Summary: A waste-to-energy incinerator in Turin, Italy was studied for its potential health effects on the nearby population, with results showing no impact on human exposure to environmental contaminants. After three years, both groups of subjects showed a significant decrease in serum concentrations of analytes compared to baseline, with farmers exhibiting higher levels of contaminants than the general adult population.
