Interspecies comparisons of brominated flame retardants in relation to foraging ecology and behaviour of gulls frequenting a UK landfill

Andrew D. W. Tongue et al.

Summary: This study quantified and compared legacy and alternative brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in the eggs of three gull species in a remote landfill in western Scotland. Despite high detection frequencies, the concentrations of hexabromocyclododecanes did not exceed those of polybrominated diphenyl ethers, indicating multiple exposure routes for gulls frequenting landfills through their diet, behavior, preening, dermal exposure, and likely inhalation.

A pilot study to characterize hand-to-mouth transfer efficiency of organophosphate flame retardants identified in infant products

Lauren E. Gloekler et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine levels of flame retardants (FRs) in infant products and characterize hand-to-mouth transfer efficiency. Tris (1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TCIPP) was detected in all infant products. The presence of fabric covering on products influenced the hand-to-mouth transfer efficiency. Further research is needed to explore factors influencing individual variability of dermal loading and transfer efficiency in FR concentrations in PUF, and the role of fabric coverings on dermal transfer.
