Record of heavy metals in Huguangyan Maar Lake sediments: Response to anthropogenic atmospheric pollution in Southern China

Hongchen Wu et al.

Summary: The historical atmospheric heavy metal pollution in southern China over the past 200 years was studied using analysis of a sediment core from Huguangyan Maar Lake. The study found that Zn, Cd, Sb, Tl, and Pb in the lake were closely related to human activities, while Cr and Ni were mainly from the weathering of surrounding basalt. The increase of atmospheric Pb in southern China occurred earlier than in other regions of China, mainly due to war and the use of leaded gasoline. After 2000, atmospheric Pb continued to rise due to continued industrial development.

Microbial diversity and function in response to occurrence and source apportionment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in combined sewer overflows

Jun Wu et al.

Summary: Understanding the environmental behavior of PAHs in CSOs is crucial for managing PAH pollution in urban areas. This study analyzed the sources and effects of 16 PAHs in CSOs, finding that tetracyclic PAHs had the highest proportion and exhibited a first flush effect. Vehicular emissions were identified as the main source of particulate PAHs in CSOs, impacting river sediment PAH levels and specific microbial populations.

Vegetation Cover Change and Its Attribution in China from 2001 to 2018

Baohui Mu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the vegetation cover change trends in China from 2001 to 2018 and found that CO2, climate-related factors, and land cover change played significant roles in driving these changes. CO2 was identified as the primary driving factor for vegetation cover changes, indicating its importance in vegetation growth research.

Response of mercury accumulation to anthropogenic pollution in the past 1000 years based on Lake Huguangyan sediments, Southern China

Tianhang Li et al.

Summary: The new Pb-210-dated record of Hg accumulation in the Huguangyan Lake (HGY) sediment core from a Hg-enriched area in South China suggests that atmospheric deposition is the main source of Hg influx into the lake, with minimal input from the catchment and limited adsorption effects of organic matter and clay. Enhanced anthropogenic input of Hg began in the early 1900s, correlating with wars or increased economic activities in China. The HGY sediments serve as a valuable natural archive for studying atmospheric Hg deposition related to human activities.
