Electrochemical activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by carbon cloth anode for sulfamethoxazole degradation

Jingyi Fu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the electrochemical activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) at a carbon cloth anode for the degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). It was found that higher PMS concentrations and current densities improved the degradation of SMX, with the presence of chloride ions enhancing degradation and humic acid inhibiting it. The degradation pathways were identified to include hydroxylation, cleavage of S-N bond, and oxidation of aniline group, with sulfate radical, hydroxyl radical, and singlet oxygen contributing to SMX degradation in the system.

Synthesizing and characterizing Fe3O4 embedded in N-doped carbon nanotubes-bridged biochar as a persulfate activator for sulfamethoxazole degradation

Tong Liu et al.

Summary: Nitrogen-doped magnetic carbon nanotubes-bridged biochar (Fe3O4@NCNTs-BC) was prepared and showed excellent capacity in activating persulfate for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. A direct electron transfer regime involving surface-bound metastable complexes was found to play a decisive role in the Fe3O4@NCNTs-BC800/peroxydisulfate (PDS) system. The differences in degradation performances and activation regimes were attributed to the surface hydroxyl groups of carbon-based catalysts and the structure discrepancies between PMS and PDS.

Fanzhi Qin et al.

Summary: Lignocellulosic biomass pyrolysis and gasification technologies have been widely explored for the production of bio-oil, syngas, and process heat. The byproduct of this process, biochar, has attracted attention for its potential value in carbon utilization and carbon neutralization. However, there is a lack of systematic studies on the chemical composition and structure changes during the carbonization process of lignocellulosic biomass, as well as the origin of biochar reactivity. Soybean straw biochar activating peroxydisulfate to simultaneously eliminate tetracycline and tetracycline resistance bacteria: Insights on the mechanism

Ran Duan et al.

Summary: Tetracycline has been detected in various environments, leading to the development of resistance in bacterial populations. This study fabricated soybean straw biochars (SSBs) at different pyrolysis temperatures and used them as activators for the degradation of tetracycline and disinfection of tetracycline-resistant Escherichia coli. The results showed that the purification effect of SSBs depended on the pyrolysis temperature, with SSB1000/PS system exhibiting superior degradation and disinfection capabilities. The purification mechanisms of tetracycline and Escherichia coli were found to be different, with tetracycline degradation mainly relying on surface-bound radicals and bactericidal activity attributed to free SO4 center dot- in bulk solutions. The catalytic performance of SSB1000 was attributed to its unique characteristics, such as large mesopore volumes, high C=O content, low interfacial charge transfer resistance, and strong electron donating capacity.

Reconstructing the coordination environment of single atomic Fe-catalysts for boosting the Fenton-like degradation activities

Yuanzheng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study develops an advanced single-atomic iron-loaded graphitic carbon nitride (Fe-1/CN) with unparalleled efficiency for converting peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to oxidants for water treatment. Acid-etching of Fe-1/CN leads to the reconstruction of conventional Fe-1-N-4 to Fe-1-C2N1 active sites, which are more favorable for PMS binding and have a lower energy barrier for O-1(2) production. The acid-etched Fe-1/CN shows 29 times higher rate constants of bisphenol A degradation compared to its pristine counterparts. The particulate catalysts, assembled into a self-supported catalytic membrane, exhibit excellent long-term durability in flow-through tests.
