Neonicotinoids: mechanisms of systemic toxicity based on oxidative stress-mitochondrial damage

Xiaoqing Xu et al.

Summary: This article reviews the effects of neonicotinoids on mitochondria and evaluates the protective effects of various active substances against neonicotinoid-induced toxicity. The research found that neonicotinoids can disrupt mitochondrial calcium ions homeostasis, inhibit mitochondrial respiration, and induce reactive oxygen species production, which leads to damage in non-target organisms. However, several active substances can protect against neonicotinoid-induced systemic toxicity by inhibiting oxidative signaling pathways, apoptosis, and lipid peroxidation. The article emphasizes the importance and urgency of developing neonicotinoid antidotes, with a focus on targeted mitochondrial antidotes.

Uptake, translocation and metabolism of imidacloprid loaded within fluorescent mesoporous silica nanoparticles in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum)

Meiqing Zhu et al.

Summary: The use of fluorescence-labeled mesoporous silica nanoparticles as a carrier for imidacloprid in tomato plants resulted in higher concentration, longer half-life, and fewer metabolites compared to the foliar application of granular formulation. These findings suggest that mesoporous silica nanoparticles can effectively transport pesticides in plants, improving plant protection while minimizing environmental and dietary risks.

Silica nanoparticles as novel sustainable approach for plant growth and crop protection

Pooja Goswami et al.

Summary: Agricultural crops face various challenges, and the development of new agricultural technologies is necessary. Nanotechnology can help increase the quality and production of crops by developing nano-based fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides, and early disease diagnostics. Silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) have unique physiological properties that allow them to penetrate plants and regulate their metabolic processes, leading to improvements in pesticide delivery, nutrition supply, disease management, and photosynthetic efficiency and germination rate.

Combined lethal toxicities of pesticides with similar structures to Caenorhabditis elegans are not necessarily concentration additives

Peng Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mixture toxicity of pesticides with similar chemical structures and found that the interaction types of different types of pesticide mixtures varied, with some showing antagonistic effects and others showing synergistic effects. The structural similarity of pesticides was found to have a quantitative relationship with the toxicity interaction of mixtures, indicating that within a certain range, the structural similarity of the same type of pesticides may exhibit additive action.

Applied pesticide toxicity shifts toward plants and invertebrates, even in GM crops

Ralf Schulz et al.

Summary: Systematic interpretation of changes in the use of 381 pesticides over 25 years reveals that the toxicity of applied insecticides to aquatic invertebrates and pollinators has considerably increased, driven by highly toxic pyrethroids and neonicotinoids. Additionally, since around 2010, there has been an increasing applied toxicity to aquatic invertebrates and pollinators in genetically modified corn, as well as to terrestrial plants in herbicide-tolerant soybeans. These findings challenge the assumption of decreasing environmental impacts of pesticide use.
