Evaluation and comparison of the earth observing sensors in land cover/land use studies using machine learning algorithms

Pankaj Prasad et al.

Summary: The efficiency of different satellite sensors and models in monitoring land cover/land use was evaluated and compared in this study. The integration of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 datasets showed the highest accuracy, while the logit boost model was the most consistent and efficient. The study found that regional scale mapping requires high spatial and spectral resolutions along with the combination of satellite datasets, rather than just high spatial resolution.

Vertical Ground Displacements and Its Impact on Erosion along the Karachi Coastline, Pakistan

Shamsa Kanwal et al.

Summary: This study used remote sensing and data analysis techniques to investigate vertical ground displacements and coastline erosion in Karachi, Pakistan. The results showed that some areas of the Karachi coastline are subsiding at rates comparable to or higher than the relative sea-level rise, which may accelerate coastal erosion. The causes of ground displacements and coastline erosion were identified as rapid urbanization, construction on reclaimed land, coastline erosion favoring seawater intrusion, failed drainage/sewerage networks, and soil liquefaction.

Landslide susceptibility mapping (LSM) of Swat District, Hindu Kush Himalayan region of Pakistan, using GIS-based bivariate modeling

Fakhrul Islam et al.

Summary: Landslides are a recurring environmental hazard in hilly regions of Pakistan, affecting socioeconomic development. This study aims to create a landslide susceptibility mapping (LSM) of the Hindu Kush Himalayan, Swat District, using three bivariate models (WOE, FR, and IV) that have not been previously applied in the area. The models were validated using AUROC, with the FR model proving to be the most reliable technique. Policymakers can utilize the findings to mitigate landslide hazards.

Modeling and Predicting Land Use Land Cover Spatiotemporal Changes: A Case Study in Chalus Watershed, Iran

Sepideh Jalayer et al.

Summary: This study detected the temporal and spatial changes in land use and land cover patterns in the Chalus watershed over the last two decades using multitemporal Landsat images and predicted future changes for the year 2040. The findings revealed a significant increase in agricultural land and barren area, and a sharp decline in grassland and forest cover. The model predicted a continued decrease in forest cover and an expansion of barren area, agricultural land, and built-up area by 2040. Understanding the spatiotemporal dynamics of land use and land cover change is crucial in minimizing destructive consequences.
