Bacterial hitchhikers derive benefits from fungal housing

Nandhitha Venkatesh et al.

Summary: This study reveals that chlamydospores can serve as bacterial reservoirs, allowing symbiotic and pathogenic bacteria to survive and propagate in fungi, likely facilitated by bacterial lipopeptides. Furthermore, the colonization of endofungal bacterial communities in chlamydospores suggests a previously unknown ecological role. These findings provide a broader understanding of microbial niches and have significant implications for pathogenic and beneficial bacteria persistence.

Control of sheep gastrointestinal nematodes on pasture in the tropical semiarid region of Brazil, using Bioverm® (Duddingtonia flagrans)

Jossiara Abrante Rodrigues et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a Brazilian commercial product, Bioverm (R), in controlling gastrointestinal nematodes in sheep in the semiarid region of Brazil. The results showed that Bioverm (R) significantly reduced the egg count, increased weight gain, and reduced the infestation of infective larvae compared to the control group. This research has important implications for sheep farming.

A single resistance factor to solve vineyard degeneration due to grapevine fanleaf virus

Samia Djennane et al.

Summary: Researchers discovered that the Riesling variety of grapes displays resistance to grapevine fanleaf virus, providing a new genetic resource for controlling the disease. They also identified a single recessive factor named rgflv1 located on grapevine chromosome 1, paving the way for development of GFLV-resistant grapevine rootstocks. This resistance factor, distinct from virus susceptibility factors in other plants, presents a novel and environmentally friendly solution for managing grapevine fanleaf disease.

Evaluating nematode resistance of grapevine rootstocks based on Xiphinema index reproduction rates in a fast screening assay

J. Schurig et al.

Summary: The method of using nematode reproduction rates for resistance screening of grapevine rootstocks is shown to be faster and more reliable than traditional long-lasting inoculation experiments. The results indicate that the reproduction rates of rootstocks decrease as the level of resistance increases.

Selected Genotypes with the Genetic Background of Vitis aestivalis and Vitis labrusca Are Resistant to Xiphinema index

Juliane Schurig et al.

Summary: In order to develop reliably resistant rootstocks applicable in viticulture, researchers conducted analysis of multiple Vitis spp. genotypes through root inoculation with nematodes in glass vials as an early and easy evaluation test. Resistance levels were assessed based on nematode reproduction factors after 35 days of inoculation, with a focus on juveniles and eggs. Through this fast screening system, potential candidates with resistances against X. index have been identified for future breeding programs, particularly those with genetic backgrounds of Vitis aestivalis and Vitis labrusca were found to be nematode-resistant.

Fatal attraction of Caenorhabditis elegans to predatory fungi through 6-methyl-salicylic acid

Xi Yu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the nematode-trapping fungus Duddingtonia flagrans utilizes 6-MSA to control trap formation and attract Caenorhabditis elegans. This compound plays a crucial role in interkingdom communication between fungi and nematodes.
