Pyroptosis participates in PM2.5-induced air-blood barrier dysfunction

Ruxue Jia et al.

Summary: This study found that acute PM2.5 exposure can cause lung injury and disruption of the alveolar-capillary barrier by inducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) with the participation of the pyroptosis pathway. Treatment with N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) reduced oxidative stress and improved the function of the air-blood barrier, alleviating the effects of PM2.5.

Exposure to ambient air pollution and osteoarthritis; an animal study

Abyadul Fitriyah et al.

Summary: This study assessed the effect of exposure to air pollution on osteoarthritis (OA) and found that exposure to particulate matter and gaseous pollutants significantly increased the risk of OA in rats. Additionally, the combined exposure had a stronger effect on OA compared to separate exposure to particulate matter and gaseous pollutants.

Size-based effects of anthropogenic ultrafine particles on activation of human lung macrophages

Simone Marcella et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic particulate matter (PM), one of the main pollutants in industrialized cities, has adverse effects on respiratory diseases. Ultrafine particles (PM0.1) play a crucial role in inflammatory response and induce the release of proinflammatory cytokines from human lung macrophages. NP20 is the main proinflammatory factor, and new monitoring techniques and strategies are needed.

Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter and ozone and the onset of systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases: an open cohort study in Quebec, Canada

Naizhuo Zhao et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the associations between fine particulate matter and ozone with the onset of systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases. The results showed a correlation between PM2.5 and SARDs incidence, but no clear relationship with ozone was found. Additional studies are needed to better understand the interplays between air pollutants and rheumatic diseases.

Association between traffic-related air pollution and hospital readmissions for rheumatoid arthritis in Hefei, China: A time-series study

Qian Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the short-term association between traffic-related air pollutants and hospital readmissions for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in Hefei, China. Results showed that high-concentration PM2.5 and NO2 were associated with increased risk of RA readmissions, with females, the elderly, and cold seasons being more vulnerable. Protective measures should be taken to reduce recurrence risk, especially in these vulnerable populations and during cold seasons.

Cigarette smoke induces miR-132 in Th17 cells that enhance osteoclastogenesis in inflammatory arthritis

Paula B. Donate et al.

Summary: Transcriptomic analysis revealed that microRNA-132 is induced specifically in Th17 cells in the presence of AhR agonist or CS-enriched medium. This induced miRNA132 acts as a proinflammatory mediator by promoting osteoclastogenesis through down-regulating COX2, exacerbating the development of RA.
