Revisiting the mechanisms of arsenic uptake, transport and detoxification in plants

Alok Kumar et al.

Summary: Arsenic contamination leading to toxicity in animals and humans has become a major concern in recent decades. Developing plants with reduced arsenic levels in their edible parts is a plausible strategy for decreasing human arsenic intake. This review summarizes recent progress in understanding arsenic uptake, translocation, and detoxification mechanisms in plants, and highlights biotechnological approaches for enhancing arsenic tolerance in different plant species.

Arsenic exposure in Indo Gangetic plains of Bihar causing increased cancer risk

Arun Kumar et al.

Summary: The relationship between arsenic poisoning and cancer, especially the carcinoma type, is significant, with higher risk for those affected in the Gangetic plains region near the Ganges river. Blood arsenic levels in cancer patients are considerably higher, indicating a strong correlation. The study emphasizes the need to address the root cause of increased cancer incidences in Bihar's Gangetic basin and its connection to arsenic poisoning.

Arsenic-induced differential expression of oxidative stress and secondary metabolite content in two genotypes of Andrographis paniculata

Paurabi Das et al.

Summary: This study found that different genotypes of A. paniculata exhibited differential responses to three application rates of arsenic, with the AP(MS) genotype showing higher tolerance and ent-LRD content under arsenic stress.

Redox imbalance impedes photosynthetic activity in rice by disrupting cellular membrane integrity and induces programmed cell death under submergence

Sahana Basu et al.

Summary: Climate change has a negative impact on global hydrological resources, leading to detrimental flood events. Plants respond to submergence by adjusting membrane lipid composition to adapt to stress, which is closely related to membrane integrity, cell viability, and photosynthesis.

Arsenic exposure from food exceeds that from drinking water in endemic area of Bihar, India

Debapriya Mondal et al.

Summary: This study found that in arsenic-exposed populations in Bihar, India, food contributes almost equally to overall arsenic exposure as drinking water does, even in areas where drinking water arsenic levels exceed the WHO guideline value. These results emphasize the importance of food-related exposure in arsenic-endemic areas, especially in regions with high arsenic concentrations in drinking water.

Nitro-oxidative stress induces the formation of roots' cortical aerenchyma in rice under osmotic stress

Sahana Basu et al.

Summary: In summary, drought stress induces the formation of cortical aerenchyma in rice roots, affecting the water uptake and transport. Reactive oxygen species and nitric oxide are key factors in lysigenous aerenchyma development under drought, with antioxidant defense system playing a major role in detoxification. Additionally, the formation of Casparian strip is associated with drought tolerance in rice.
