Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress and Unfolded Protein Response Signaling in Plants

Hakim Manghwar et al.

Summary: Plants are sensitive to various stresses that can lead to diseases, but they have defense mechanisms to cope with these stresses. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) plays a crucial role in protein folding, but this process can be disrupted by stresses, causing ER stress. We discuss ER stress, the unfolded protein response (UPR) and strategies for reducing ER stress in plants.

Golgi anti-apoptotic proteins redundantly counteract cell death by inhibiting production of reactive oxygen species under endoplasmic reticulum stress

Xiao-Han Tang et al.

Summary: This study reveals that GAAP1 and GAAP4 play redundant positive roles in regulating ER stress response in plants. They maintain proteostasis by inhibiting ROS accumulation through regulating glutathione content, thus enhancing cell viability and survival.

What's unique? The unfolded protein response in plants

Chao-Yuan Yu et al.

Summary: This review discusses the uniqueness of plants in the conserved unfolded protein response mechanism. While plants and animals share similarities in the molecular mechanisms of UPR, recent studies have revealed the distinctiveness of plant UPR, with plant-specific protein families playing crucial roles.

Tomato bZIP60 mRNA undergoes splicing in endoplasmic reticulum stress and in response to environmental stresses

Navpreet Kaur et al.

Summary: This study identified and characterized the tomato bZIP60 (SlbZIP60) and showed that it undergoes splicing in response to ER stress-inducing agent tunicamycin, as well as in certain plant tissues in a physiologically activated manner. SlbZIP60 also responds to environmental stresses, heat, and virus infection.

Review: The two faces of IRE1 and their role in protecting plants from stress

Zhaoxia Li et al.

Summary: IRE1 is a key factor in the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) in plants, with its luminal domain and cytoplasmic domain performing different tasks on different sides of the ER membrane. The unique features of IRE1's structure on different faces enable it to recognize protein folding problems in the ER and activate the UPR.

Susceptibility factor RTP1 negatively regulates Phytophthora parasitica resistance via modulating UPR regulators bZIP60 and bZIP28

Xiaoyu Qiang et al.

Summary: The UPR is a stress adaptive signaling pathway activated by misfolded proteins in the ER, and plays important roles in plant defense against pathogens. The plant susceptibility factor RTP1 is involved in ER stress sensing and synergistically regulates resistance against P. parasitica with the UPR pathway. RTP1 contributes to stabilizing the ER membrane-associated bZIP60 and bZIP28, which are key regulators of plant resistance to P. parasitica.
