Associations of long-term exposure to fine particulate matter and its constituents with cardiovascular mortality: A prospective cohort study in China

Ruiming Liang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the associations between long-term exposure to PM2.5 and its constituents and cardiovascular mortality in China. The results showed that PM2.5 exposure was associated with increased risks of cardiovascular disease, ischemic heart disease, and stroke, with PM2.5 constituents from fossil fuel combustion showing larger hazard ratios. This study emphasized the importance of PM2.5 constituents from fossil fuel combustion in the long-term cardiovascular effects of PM2.5 in China.

Potential toxicity of inorganic ions in particulate matter: Ion permeation in lung and disruption of cell metabolism

Sujin Park et al.

Summary: Exposure to ambient particulate matter (PM) has adverse health effects, but the molecular mechanism of PM-mediated toxicity is largely unknown. This study reveals that water-soluble inorganics like nitrate and sulfate ions can penetrate the lung surfactant barrier and disrupt gene expression in the lungs. The exposure to nitrate and sulfate ions activates cholesterol biosynthetic metabolism and induces the expression of genes related to tumorigenesis.

Assessment of long-term particulate nitrate air pollution and its health risk in China

Yun Hang et al.

Summary: Air pollution is a significant challenge for both the environment and public health in China. Despite the implementation of strict air quality policies, the concentration of particulate nitrate (NO3-) remains high and even increases in certain monitoring sites. The lack of a PM2.5 speciation monitoring network has made it difficult to estimate the NO3- concentration across the country. In this study, a machine learning model incorporating ground measurements and satellite data was used to characterize the spatiotemporal patterns of NO3-, providing insights into the disease burden associated with long-term NO3- exposure in China. The results show that while existing air pollution control policies are effective, the increase in NO3- from traffic emissions offsets the reduction from industrial emissions. Targeted regulations are therefore necessary to control NO3- pollution in China.

The prospective effects of long-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 and constituents on mortality in rural East China

Yun Chen et al.

Summary: Long-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 and its chemical constituents, especially BC and NO3-, increased mortality risk. A non-linear relationship was found between PM2.5 and non-accidental mortality. The study results emphasize the importance of adopting effective targeted emission control measures to improve air quality for health protection in rural East China.
