Studying the wind-induced vibrations of a traffic signal structure through long term health monitoring

Li-Wei Tsai et al.

Summary: A recent study highlighted the vulnerability of traffic signal structures to wind loading, particularly in terms of fatigue damage at pole-to-arm connection due to low mechanical damping. The monitored traffic signal structure showed low stress ranges most of the time, indicating limited wind-induced fatigue damage, but high stress ranges were recorded at high wind speeds. Compared to literature, the orientation of attached traffic lights was identified as a key parameter influencing wind-induced behavior, where vertical lights can reduce vortex-induced vibration and lower stress ranges.

Experimental investigation of the vortex-induced vibration of tapered light poles

Yan Han et al.

Summary: The weld on the surface of a tapered light pole can have a significant impact on its vortex-induced vibration characteristics and aerodynamic performance, potentially increasing or decreasing the vibration depending on its position relative to the wind direction. Different flow patterns may be triggered by the weld in certain positions, resulting in varied aerodynamic performance of light poles in the field.
