Experimental investigation on permeability, meso-damage and fractal characteristics of limestone caprock under THM coupling based on μCT technology

Anqi Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the permeability and damage characteristics of limestone caprock and their influence on the tightness and stability of salt cavern gas storage. Experimental results show that the permeability of limestone is affected by temperature and confining pressure, and the main permeability channel is pores with a radius greater than 1200 μm. The permeability is positively correlated with porosity. The fractal dimension of rock decreases with higher confining pressure, and the permeability after rock damage is positively correlated with the fractal dimension and maximum pore diameter. These findings provide valuable insights for the construction of deep-earth gas storage reservoirs.

Evolution of permeability and microscopic pore structure of sandstone and its weakening mechanism under coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical environment subjected to real-time high temperature

Tao Meng et al.

Summary: This study observed the permeability evolution in sandstone under real-time high temperature and triaxial stress using a self-developed universal tester with high temperature and high pressure capabilities. The results show that the microscopic structures within the sandstone under the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical condition are vastly different from those subjected to heat treatment only.

Evolution of anisotropic permeability of fractured sandstones subjected to true-triaxial stresses during reservoir depletion

Tongwen Jiang et al.

Summary: The experimental investigation on the anisotropic permeability behavior of fractured sandstones in three principal stress directions shows that directional permeability of fractured specimens is about one order of magnitude higher than intact rock at the same stress state, and the permeability variation is significantly related to fracture geometry.

Thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) evolution law and development of permeability and pore structure of enhanced geothermal systems at ultra-high temperatures

Fengbiao Wu et al.

Summary: The evolution law and fluctuation mechanism of permeability and pore structure of stimulated reservoirs in hot dry rocks under the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical environment in ultra-high temperature are investigated in this study. Experimental results show that the microscopic physical parameters increase monotonously with the increase of temperature at 25 to 400 degrees C, fluctuated slightly at 400 to 550 degrees C, and are much larger at 550 to 650 degrees C due to severe deterioration of rock mass caused by the coupling THM process.

Experimental and numerical investigation of the failure mechanism and permeability evolution of sandstone based on hydro-mechanical coupling

Man Li et al.

Summary: The study investigates the failure mechanism and permeability evolution of low-permeability reservoir sandstone under hydro-mechanical coupling through experimental tests and numerical simulations. The results show a relationship between sandstone permeability, deviatoric stress, and effective confining pressure, and propose a new indicator for characterizing the rock's ability to resist deformation and failure.

Experimental study on permeability and porosity evolution of host rock with varying damage degrees in excavation damaged area under real-time ultra-high temperature and triaxial stress/seepage pressure condition

Tao Meng et al.

Summary: In the field of high-temperature underground excavations, the research on the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical responses of the damaged host rock in excavation damage zone under real-time ultra-high temperature and triaxial stress/seepage pressure is limited. Experimental results show that permeability and porosity of the rock do not continuously increase with temperature, but depend on the interaction of temperature field, stress field, seepage field, and damage regime. The relationship between permeability and seepage pressure is closely related to the damage degree of the rock specimens.
