Effects of variations in fuel properties on a homogeneous charge compression ignited light-duty diesel engine operated with gasoline-isobutanol blends

Aneesh Vijay Kale et al.

Summary: In this study, experiments were conducted on a modified diesel engine operating in port fuel injected HCCI mode with gasoline-isobutanol blends. It was found that increasing the concentration of isobutanol in the fuel blends improved the engine's load range, performance, and reduced emissions. Additionally, the addition of a cetane improver, 2-EHN, enabled stable HCCI combustion at lower engine loads.

Investigations on load range extension of a homogeneous charge compression ignited light-duty diesel engine operated with diisopropyl ether and gasoline blends

Aneesh Vijay Kale et al.

Summary: This study aims to extend the operating load range of a diesel engine in HCCI mode by using high volatile, optimum reactivity fuel. The results show that increasing the content of diisopropyl ether in fuel blends can improve the indicated thermal efficiency, but also increase the emissions of unburned hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide.

Investigation of the Effect of Altitude on In-Cylinder Heat Transfer in Heavy-Duty Diesel Engines Based on an Empirical Model

Zhentao Liu et al.

Summary: Diesel engines are the primary power source for the trucking industry, but they face challenges of reduced thermal efficiency and increased emissions when operated at high altitudes. This study investigates the impact of altitude on in-cylinder heat transfer characteristics in diesel engines. Experimental results show that high altitudes lead to higher bulk temperatures and increased heat loss. Therefore, the application of thermal coatings to improve fuel economy is crucial in high altitude regions.

Analysis on the potential of EGR strategy to reduce fuel consumption in hybrid powertrains based on advanced gasoline engines under simulated driving cycle conditions

Hector Climent et al.

Summary: The increased concern for environmental problems has led to the electrification of passenger cars, primarily through hybrid powertrains. Automotive manufacturers have chosen hybrids due to limitations and cost factors of battery electric vehicles and diesel vehicles. The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) strategy reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions in gasoline engines. This research aimed to quantify the fuel saving achieved with EGR in a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain under driving cycle conditions.

Investigation of in-cylinder combustion deterioration of diesel engines in plateau regions

Zhongwei Meng et al.

Summary: This study reveals the causes of combustion deterioration in high altitude environments and proposes strategies to improve plateau engines. The results suggest that increased altitude enhances fuel injection penetration, leading to uneven combustion and decreased efficiency, especially above 3000 meters.

Brian Gainey et al.

Summary: The study compared the autoignition properties of methanol, ethanol, n-propanol, isopropanol, n-butanol, isobutanol, and sec-butanol in HCCI. It was found that n-butanol was less sensitive to intake temperature changes and had high autoignition resistance. Other alcohol fuels showed similar behavior and sensitivity to various operating conditions.
