Electrically driven SiC-based structured catalysts for intensified reforming processes

Simona Renda et al.

Summary: This study investigated the electrification of reforming processes by using commercial silicon carbide (SiC) heating elements as catalyst carriers to provide heat directly for the reaction. The experiments demonstrated the possibility of realizing a process by reversing the flow of heat, achieving higher methane conversion rates in both steam and dry reforming reactions.

A high temperature tubular reactor with hybrid concentrated solar and electric heat supply for steam methane reforming

Jing Ma et al.

Summary: Solar-powered steam methane reforming is an efficient way to generate hydrogen and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The high-temperature heat pipe reactor (HTPR) proposed in this study combines concentrated solar energy and photovoltaic electricity to achieve a round-the-clock reforming process. Experimental results showed high methane conversion and hydrogen purity, as well as stable operation for 24 hours, demonstrating the potential of HTPR in resolving unstable hydrogen production by renewable energy.

Comparative assessment of blue hydrogen from steam methane reforming, autothermal reforming, and natural gas decomposition technologies for natural gas-producing regions

A. O. Oni et al.

Summary: Interest in blue hydrogen production technologies is increasing, but a comprehensive assessment is still needed. This study compares the cost and greenhouse gas emissions of three natural gas-based blue hydrogen production technologies and finds that steam methane reforming and autothermal reforming are economically preferable. The study also highlights the importance of plant size and carbon capture rate in determining the cost and emissions of blue hydrogen production.

Energy, environment, and economic analyses on a novel hydrogen production method by electrified steam methane reforming with renewable energy accommodation

Huchao Song et al.

Summary: A new electrified steam methane reforming (E-SMR) process is proposed to address the drawbacks of conventional hydrogen production methods. This process integrates power to gas technology with steam methane reforming and uses electrical equipment to improve efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. The optimal performance of the E-SMR process is investigated, showing higher thermal and electrical efficiency compared to current industrial methods. The proposed process has the potential to provide an efficient, low-carbon, and economical option for hydrogen production.

Ultracompact methane steam reforming reactor based on microwaves susceptible structured catalysts for distributed hydrogen production

Eugenio Meloni et al.

Summary: Hydrogen as a green energy source can be produced through methane steam reforming, but traditional methods have limitations in terms of efficiency and cost. Microwave heating could overcome these limitations by efficiently transferring heat to the catalyst, resulting in faster reactions and higher energy efficiency. Initial tests showed promising results, with the system reaching high temperatures and methane conversion rates close to thermodynamic equilibrium values. Future studies will focus on optimizing the microwave reactor to further increase energy efficiency and improve CH4 conversion rates for enhanced hydrogen production.

Methane emissions from upstream oil and gas production in Canada are underestimated

Katlyn MacKay et al.

Summary: Methane emissions were measured at 6650 sites across six major oil and gas producing regions in Canada, showing variations by fluid type and geographic region. The estimate for Canada's upstream oil and gas methane inventory is underestimated by a factor of 1.5, particularly in heavy oil regions and in emission intensities for natural gas production.

How green is blue hydrogen?

Robert W. Howarth et al.

Summary: Despite the lower carbon dioxide emissions, the greenhouse gas emissions from the production of blue hydrogen are still quite high due to the release of fugitive methane. The use of blue hydrogen appears challenging to justify on climate grounds, as even with reduced methane emission rates, the emissions are still greater than simply burning natural gas.
