Predicting formation damage of oil fields due to mineral scaling during water-flooding operations: Gradient boosting decision tree and cascade-forward back-propagation network

Aydin Larestani et al.

Summary: Water-flooding is a key technique used by the oil industry to meet increasing demand for oil, with potential for formation damage if water used is not compatible. In this study, intelligent models were employed to accurately estimate formation damage during waterflooding, with the GBDT model outperforming others and showing high dependency on injected water volume, initial permeability, and sulfate ion concentration.

Effect of nanoparticles on the performance of polymer/surfactant flooding for enhanced oil recovery: A review

Omid Tavakkoli et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively reviews the positive effects of nanoparticles (NPs) on the performance of polymer and surfactant flooding in Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR). The results show that NPs have great potential to improve the rheological properties of polymers, reduce interfacial tension, alter reservoir rock wettability towards more water-wet medium, and decrease surfactant adsorption on porous media.

Huff-n-Puff Technology for Enhanced Oil Recovery in Shale/Tight Oil Reservoirs: Progress, Gaps, and Perspectives

Muhend Milad et al.

Summary: In recent times, there has been a significant increase in global energy demand, leading to the depletion of conventional oil reservoirs. To meet this growing energy demand, there has been a focus on seeking alternative oil resources, particularly unconventional oil formations like shale oil reservoirs. While shale oil reservoirs have been successful, challenges remain such as rapidly declining oil flow rates and oil retention in pores.

Application of cascade forward neural network and group method of data handling to modeling crude oil pyrolysis during thermal enhanced oil recovery

Mohammad-Reza Mohammadi et al.

Summary: This study developed general models using neural networks to predict the residual mass during crude oil pyrolysis. More than 2000 experimental data were utilized, and six optimization algorithms were applied to enhance the performance and prediction ability of the models. The CFNN model optimized with the LM algorithm showed the best fit with a mean absolute percent relative error of 1.04%. Additionally, a mathematical correlation was developed using the group method of data handling (GMDH) to estimate the residual mass of crude oil pyrolysis in TGA.

Summary: Surface modification of nanoparticles using a combination of zwitterionic and hydrophilic silanes has been shown to improve stability under high salinity and high temperature conditions. Accelerated stability analysis predicts that the modified nanoparticles can remain stable for at least 6 months, with contact angle measurements indicating potential effectiveness in carbonate reservoirs.

Comprehensive review on surfactant adsorption on mineral surfaces in chemical enhanced oil recovery

Zilong Liu et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the key issue of surfactant adsorption in chemical enhanced oil recovery (cEOR) and addresses major concerns regarding surfactant adsorption processes. Factors that affect surfactant adsorption such as surfactant characteristics, solution chemistry, rock mineralogy, and temperature were discussed systematically. Various strategies to minimize surfactant adsorption and improve flooding strategies were highlighted to address current trends and future challenges in surfactant-based EOR under harsh conditions.

TiO2 nanoparticle-induced Xanthan Gum Polymer for EOR: Assessing the underlying mechanisms in oil-wet carbonates

Amin Keykhosravi et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the potential of Anatase TiO2 nanoparticles-induced Xanthan-gum polymer as a Nano-polymer suspension for enhanced oil recovery in carbonates. Results showed that the Nano-polymer suspension could improve viscosity recovery, dispersion stability of nanoparticles, wettability alteration, and oil displacement efficiency. The experimental findings indicated a 25% additional oil recovery using the Nano-polymer suspension compared to TiO2 nanofluid and polymer solution.

Experimental analysis of hybrid low salinity water alternating gas injection and the underlying mechanisms in carbonates

Nikoo Moradpour et al.

Summary: Enhanced oil recovery methods, such as low salinity water flooding and water alternating gas injection, when combined together, can effectively improve oil production by altering rock wettability and controlling fluid mobility. The synergistic effects of these methods result in increased ultimate oil recovery by enhancing displacement and mobilization of oil in the reservoir.
