A review of bio-oil upgrading by catalytic hydrotreatment: Advances, challenges, and prospects

Mingyuan Zhang et al.

Summary: Fast pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction are considered promising technologies for liquid bio-fuel production, but the poor quality of crude bio-oils has limited their direct applications. Hydrotreatment such as hydrodeoxygenation is a common upgrading technique, and this review explores the effects of different reaction conditions on the HDO treatment of real bio-oil. The underlying mechanisms for bio-oil HDO, technical challenges, and potential solutions are discussed, along with knowledge gaps and future research directions.

Stabilization of fast pyrolysis liquids from biomass by catalytic hydrotreatment using Raney nickel type catalysts

Wang Yin et al.

Summary: The study focused on catalytic hydrotreatment of fast pyrolysis liquids from lignocellulosic biomass using different types of Raney nickel catalysts, with Mo-promoted Ra-Ni catalyst showing the highest hydro-(deoxy)genation activity and lowest charring tendency of the product oil. The analyses of product oils revealed the presence of a significant amount of phenolics, indicating the potential of commercially available Raney nickel catalysts, particularly the Mo-promoted ones, for mild hydrotreatment of pyrolysis liquids.
