Assessment of oil and gas fields in California as potential CO2 storage sites

Tae Wook Kim et al.

Summary: This study identifies potential carbon capture and storage (CCS) sites in California through a thorough screening and scoring process. 14 prospective sites with a storage resource greater than 20 MtCO(2) are found, which could potentially provide over 20 years of storage. The study also suggests re-evaluating the storage potential of saline formations.

Long-term permeability evolution of shale seal rocks with argon and scCO2

Arash Karnali-Asl et al.

Summary: This study conducted a series of experiments to evaluate the long-term permeability evolution of shale rocks under constant effective stress before, during, and after interaction with supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)). The experiments revealed that the permeability of shale rocks is affected by phenomena such as salt precipitation, swelling-induced cracks, and carbonate dissolution during long-term interaction with CO2. The initial permeability of the samples was found to play a significant role in their long-term permeability response to CO2.

How Does CO2 Adsorption Alter Coal Wettability? Implications for CO2 Geo-Sequestration

X. Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanisms and relationships between CO2 adsorption and coal wettability by combining direct measurements and molecular dynamic simulations. The researchers find that coal wettability significantly weakens under increasing CO2 pressure. This study provides a robust method and results for accurately predicting CO2 storage capacity in coalbeds and enhanced methane recovery.

Effects of Supercritical CO2 on Matrix Permeability of Unconventional Formations

Arash Kamali-Asl et al.

Summary: The study observed a negative correlation between initial permeability and carbonate content in the formations. Clay- and organic-rich samples experienced a reversible decrease in permeability due to matrix swelling from adsorption of scCO(2), while carbonate-rich samples showed an irreversible increase in permeability from dissolution of carbonate minerals. Flow of scCO(2) through mu m-scale cracks plays a key role in determining matrix permeability and pressure dependence.

Use of Gas Adsorption and Inversion Methods for Shale Pore Structure Characterization

Bryan X. Medina-Rodriguez et al.

Summary: This review discusses the importance of using gases, particularly N2 and CO2, for characterizing shale pore architecture. The state of the art in inversion methods for gas adsorption and obtaining surface area and pore-size distribution is described. Limitations of the gas adsorption technique and its most suitable application scenario are also presented to provide insight into the future of gas adsorption for shale characterization.
