Three-dimensional wind velocity reconstruction based on tensor decomposition and CFD data with experimental verification

Guangchao Zhang et al.

Summary: Wind energy is rapidly developing, but the sporadic and random nature of wind poses challenges to stable and efficient power supply. This paper proposes a tensor-based method that combines Tucker decomposition and computational fluid dynamics to reconstruct 3D wind velocity distributions. The proposed method accurately reconstructs wind fields and offers an innovative approach to short-term wind forecasting.

Summary: Previous estimations of global onshore wind energy potential have shown a wide range of values. This study compares estimates from different wind speed data resolutions and hub heights, and highlights the importance of spatial resolution for wind resource assessment at local and global scales.

A temporal model for vertical extrapolation of wind speed and wind energy assessment

Paola Crippa et al.

Summary: This study develops a new model for alpha that captures hourly variability across different geographic/topographic features, outperforming prior formulations and reducing wind speed RMSE by 23-33% on average. The improved estimates have significant implications for wind energy potential assessments and wind farm siting.

Global atlas of solar and wind resources temporal complementarity

Jacek Kapica et al.

Summary: This study addresses the lack of global complementarity study between solar and wind resources using the same data source and methodology. Findings show that Kendall's Tau correlation ranges between -0.75 and 0.75 globally, with a recommendation for solar dominance in tropical and subtropical regions to minimize daily energy production variability.

Complementarity and 'Resource Droughts' of Solar and Wind Energy in Poland: An ERA5-Based Analysis

Jakub Jurasz et al.

Summary: In recent years, Poland has significantly increased its capacity of solar and wind power plants, driven by both EU policies and cost competitiveness. Research in Poland has shown that there is seasonal complementarity between solar and wind resources, with joint operation exhibiting smoother availability patterns. This supports the growth of local hybrid systems to reduce variability and intermittency, reducing the need for energy storage.

Wind resource assessment and energy potential of selected locations in Fiji

Kunal K. Dayal et al.

Summary: This study assesses the wind resource at selected locations in Fiji for potential future utility-scale wind-power development. Three sites, Rakiraki, Nabouwalu, and Udu, are identified for further comprehensive resource assessment once more wind data is available, with the potential for high AEP and net capacity factors.

A stochastic simulation scheme for the long-term persistence, heavy-tailed and double periodic behavior of observational and reanalysis wind time-series

Loukas Katikas et al.

Summary: The study utilized observational records and modelled data from the Uncertainties in Ensembles of Regional Re-Analyses system for statistical analysis, performance investigation of reanalysis data, and application of a stochastic generation mathematical framework. Results showed that the Generalized Gamma distribution demonstrated enhanced performance in most statistical tests, but the credibility of the reanalysis data was questioned.

Exploring backup requirements to complement wind, solar and hydro generation in a highly renewable Spanish power system

P. Tapetado et al.

Summary: A weather-driven model was used to study the requirements for backup generation in a power system with varying penetrations of wind, solar, and hydroelectricity. It was found that flexibility needed for backup generation is higher with increased solar penetration. The model was applied to the Spanish power system, where two dispatch strategies for reservoir hydro and pumped hydro storage were evaluated.

Reliability of ERA5 Reanalysis Data for Wind Resource Assessment: A Comparison against Tall Towers

Giovanni Gualtieri

Summary: The reliability of ERA5 reanalyses for predicting wind resources and energy production at different sites has been evaluated, showing that its suitability varies depending on the site's topography and land use changes, caution is needed when selecting its use. Predictions in coastal and mountainous areas are less accurate.

On the spatiotemporal complementarity of the European onshore wind resource

Dirk Schindler et al.

Summary: The study examined the potential of complementary use of national wind resources available in 33 European countries, finding that geographical proximity is a critical factor in determining the complementarity of national wind energy yields. However, the high correlation of wind energy yield in most central and western European countries limits the potential for complementary use of national wind resources.
