Detection and identification of nature of mutual synchronization for low- and high-frequency non-premixed syngas combustion dynamics

Vikram Ramanan et al.

Summary: This study investigates non-premixed syngas combustion with a bluff body and its multimodal operation of low- and high-frequency instability. High-speed imaging of chemiluminescence is used to examine synchronous or sequential twin heat release rate zones. The flame dynamics reveal that low-frequency oscillations are significantly influenced by flame residing in the shear layer and in the wall vicinity, while high-frequency oscillations have both lateral and stabilization contributions.

Investigation of hydrogen addition on the combustion, performance, and emission characteristics of a heavy-duty engine fueled with diesel/natural gas

Jianbin Luo et al.

Summary: In this study, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics model of a diesel engine cylinder was developed and a chemical reaction mechanism containing 53 species and 325 reactions was established. The effects of hydrogen addition on the performance, combustion, and emission characteristics of a dual-fuel engine were investigated. The results showed that hydrogen addition improved the engine performance, but slightly increased NOx emissions.

Effect of assisted hydrogen on combustion and emission characteristics of a diesel engine fueled with biodiesel

Zhiqing Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of hydrogen assisted biodiesel with different fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) on the performance and emissions of a diesel engine. The results show that increasing the hydrogen content can increase cylinder pressure, cylinder temperature, and indicated thermal efficiency, while reducing hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions, but increasing nitrogen oxide emissions.

Premixed syngas/air combustion in closed ducts with varied aspect ratios and initial pressures

Xiaobo Shen et al.

Summary: Experiments were conducted to investigate the premixed stoichiometric syngas/air combustion in confined spaces. The flame shape evolution and flame speed oscillation regimes were captured under different conditions. The results showed that higher initial pressure and aspect ratio led to more violent propagation dynamics and increased combustion instability.

Effect of rate of change of parameter on early warning signals for critical transitions

Induja Pavithran et al.

Summary: The rate of change of the control parameter greatly affects the performance of early warning signals for critical transitions. Lag-1 autocorrelation and Hurst exponent are found to be good measures to predict the transition well before the tipping point, with warning time decreasing with an increase in the rate of change of the control parameter. The observation of hyperexponential scaling between the autocorrelation and variance of fluctuations during a dynamic Hopf bifurcation is reported and confirmed in a theoretical model.

Comparative analysis of the stability and structure of premixed C3H8/O2/CO2 and C3H8/O2/N2 flames for clean flexible energy production

Asif Ali et al.

Summary: The study compared the macrostructure and stabilization parameters of premixed oxy-propane and oxygen-enriched air-propane flames in a model dry-low-emissions gas turbine combustor. It was found that both types of flames followed constant adiabatic flame temperature contours on the stability maps, indicating that flames blow out and flashback limits are affected by AFT rather than oxygen fraction or equivalence ratio.

Flame-resolved transient simulation with swirler-induced turbulence applied to lean blowoff premixed flame experiment

Summary: This article presents a flame-resolved transient simulation of the Cavaliere et al. premixed flame experiment to investigate mechanisms leading to lean blowoff. The computational results show good agreement with experimental data, and the underlying mechanism of lean blowout is analyzed using DMD technique, flow field visualizations, and OH field analysis. The key phenomenon leading to lean blowout in this configuration is associated with convective motion of cooler combustion products into the inner recirculation zone as equivalence ratio decreases.
