Optimization of the depressurization rate and stepwise strategy for hydrate exploitation using a genetic algorithm-based depressurization method

Kun Ge et al.

Summary: This study combines a hydrate decomposition model with a genetic algorithm and optimizes the pressure-drop rate and strategy to improve the efficiency of hydrate exploitation. The results show that increasing the pressure-drop rate can enhance the exploitation efficiency in the continuous slow depressurization method, while increasing the number of pressure-drop stages has a negative impact on the exploitation efficiency in the stepwise depressurization method. This study provides guidance for optimizing the production efficiency of hydrate exploitation via depressurization.

Summary: This study reviews methane hydrate production through simulations and field tests, comparing the production data of different reservoirs. Factors such as porosity, permeability, pressure, and temperature are discussed. The study reveals that injection rate, temperature, pressure drop, and reservoir parameters have a significant impact on gas production. CMG STARS and TOUGH + HYDRATE show better prediction results. Depressurization and thermal techniques have high recovery rates, while CO2 injections and combination methods have lower recovery rates. Challenges in methane production include hydrate reformation, sand production, well pressure rise, and geomechanical effects.

Xinxin Cao et al.

Summary: This study explores the influence of hydrate-free interlayers (HFIs) on gas production in NGH reservoirs in the Shenhu area. The results show that NGHs adjacent to HFIs dissociate preferentially over time, thereby increasing gas production. High-permeability HFIs act as channels that enhance pressure diffusion, fluid flow, heat transfer, and long-term gas production efficiency. In contrast, low-permeability HFIs negatively affect gas production.

Effects of the vertical heterogeneity on the gas production behavior from hydrate reservoirs simulated by the fine sediments from the South China Sea

Kangji Shi et al.

Summary: Field tests have been conducted worldwide to recover natural gas from marine gas hydrate reservoirs. This study prepared reservoirs with a heterogeneous distribution of gas hydrates and investigated the effects of well location and depressurization schemes on gas production performance. The results showed that the production efficiency in the heterogeneous reservoirs was significantly weakened compared to the homogeneous case. Well placement in a high permeability layer improved gas production efficiency, but resulted in uneven temperature distribution. Cycling and step-wise depressurization raised the minimum reservoir temperature, and external heat supply was suggested for efficient gas production in hydrate-abundant regions.

Numerical investigation on the long-term gas production behavior at the 2017 Shenhu methane hydrate production site

Tao Yu et al.

Summary: In 2017, a successful offshore methane hydrate production test was conducted at well SHSC-4 in the Shenhu Area of the South China Sea, but the long-term gas production behavior remains unknown and further investigation is required. In this study, a multi-layered methane hydrate reservoir model was built based on the actual geological conditions at this site, and long-term simulations were conducted to predict hydrate dissociation and gas production behaviors in the reservoir, revealing that the majority of gas production originated from the free gas layer, followed by methane gas released from hydrate dissociation, while the three-phase layer contributed the least to gas recovery.

Prospect of marine natural gas hydrate stimulation theory and technology system

Wu Nengyou et al.

Summary: The key to realizing the commercial production of natural gas hydrate (NGH) is to significantly increase the NGH productivity, whether by enlarging the drainage area, improving dissociation efficiency, or enhancing seepage conditions. The use of complex-structure wells, multiple-well patterns, novel production methods, and reservoir stimulation technologies can greatly increase NGH productivity. However, there are technical bottlenecks in fundamental research on NGH production that need to be addressed, such as sample preparation, simulated reservoir monitoring, and mechanical coupling technologies. The combined application of complex-structure wells, well-pattern production models, novel production methods, and reservoir stimulation technologies are key to increasing NGH productivity in a significant scale.
