High purity, self-sustained, pressurized hydrogen production from ammonia in a catalytic membrane reactor

Jose L. Cerrillo et al.

Summary: The combination of catalytic decomposition of ammonia and in situ separation of hydrogen shows promise for producing clean energy. A combination of cobalt-based catalysts and a Pd-Au membrane has been found to efficiently produce high purity hydrogen. The membrane reactor offers operational advantages and energy-economic benefits compared to conventional reactors.

Ultra-pure hydrogen production via ammonia decomposition in a catalytic membrane reactor

Valentina Cechetto et al.

Summary: This work presents two alternatives for increasing the purity of hydrogen produced in a membrane reactor. The experimental results demonstrate that ultra-pure hydrogen can be produced by either increasing the thickness of the membrane selective layer or using a small purification unit in the permeate of the membranes. Additionally, the use of an adsorption bed downstream the membrane reactor is a cheaper solution that can achieve ultra-pure hydrogen with higher reactor pressures, lower temperatures, and thinner membranes.

Ammonia as an effective hydrogen carrier and a clean fuel for solid oxide fuel cells

Summary: Ammonia is increasingly recognized as a clean fuel due to its zero-carbon characteristics and high hydrogen content. Research has shown that Ni-based catalysts are considered more cost-effective and sustainable alternatives to Ru-based catalysts for ammonia decomposition. Additionally, feeding SOFCs with pre-decomposed ammonia has been identified as a promising method to mitigate anode degradation and improve cell stability.

H2 production via ammonia decomposition in a catalytic membrane reactor

Valentina Cechetto et al.

Summary: The membrane reactor proposed in this work allows for efficient recovery of hydrogen stored in ammonia, achieving high-purity hydrogen separation and ammonia decomposition simultaneously. Experimental results demonstrate that the introduction of a membrane in a conventional reactor can enhance performance and achieve high conversion rates for ammonia at sufficiently high temperatures.

Route to zero emission shipping: Hydrogen, ammonia or methanol?

Charles J. McKinlay et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the engineering considerations of alternative fuel storage on large scale international vessels, focusing on ammonia, hydrogen, and methanol. The research shows that reducing fuel storage quantities to match actual usage results in more realistic storage requirements, and the volume of hydrogen needed is not too high to be considered unviable.

Low-temperature proton-exchange membrane fuel cell-grade hydrogen production by membrane reformer equipped with Pd-composite membrane and methanation catalyst on permeation stream

Han-Young Do et al.

Summary: To produce hydrogen with low CO concentration, steam methane reforming was conducted in a Pd membrane reactor containing a methanation catalyst on the permeation side. By using a two-step vacuum-assisted electroless plating method, hydrogen selectivity was increased significantly and CO concentration was reduced to 200 ppm, making it suitable for use in LT-PEMFCs. Introducing a methanation catalyst on the permeation side further lowered the CO concentration to 4 ppm in the permeate stream, with 97.7% H2 content, which is ideal for LT-PEMFCs.
