The effect of the European Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) on aviation demand: An empirical comparison with the impact of ticket taxes

Katrin Oesingmann

Summary: The study suggests that EU ETS has no significant impact on aviation demand, while the airline ticket tax has a significant effect on demand between affected countries. Current policy measures may not be adequate in reducing aviation emissions.

Accounting for the carbon emissions from domestic air routes in China

Qiang Cui et al.

Summary: This study aims to build a carbon emission database for China's 413 main routes in 2018, including the carbon emission intensity of different aircraft types, the CCD carbon emissions of each airline and route, and the probable emissions with straight routes. The study found that Dali-Kunming and Joy Air have the highest emission intensity among the routes and airlines, and the excess emissions from non-straight routes account for about 10.15% of the actual emissions.

Developing a High-Resolution Emission Inventory of China?s Aviation Sector Using Real-World Flight Trajectory Data

Jingran Zhang et al.

Summary: Economic growth and globalization have led to a significant increase in civil aviation demand in China. This study used a real-world flight trajectory-based emission inventory to analyze the environmental impacts of China's aviation sector. The results showed that fuel consumption and CO2 emissions had two peaks in altitude distribution, while different pollutants displayed varying vertical distributions. The conventional calculation approach underestimated the emissions of CO2 and air pollutants from short-distance domestic flights.

Carbon emission post-coronavirus: Continual decline or rebound?

Rongrong Li et al.

Summary: Studies show that extreme events can temporarily reduce carbon emissions, but cannot change the long-term upward trend, leading to a retaliatory rebound in emissions. Economic recovery plans prioritize economic development and job creation, neglecting energy efficiency and causing a rebound in carbon emissions.

Real-time CO2 emissions estimation in Spain and application to the COVID-19 pandemic

Luis F. S. Merchante et al.

Summary: This paper presents a method to estimate monthly CO2 emissions for each Autonomous Community in Spain, addressing the challenges of aggregated national emissions data. It predicts a decrease in emissions due to reduced industrial activity during the COVID-19 pandemic, and provides estimates for future emissions under three recovery scenarios post-pandemic.

Assessing the impact of COVID-19 on global fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions

L. Vanessa Smith et al.

Summary: This study assesses the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global fossil fuel consumption and CO2 emissions over the period from 2020Q1 to 2021Q4. The model predicts a return to pre-crisis levels of consumption and emissions within the two-year horizon, with even greater levels anticipated. Furthermore, the results suggest that emerging economies will experience more robust growth compared to advanced economies, even in the event of another pandemic wave.

Pandemics and environmental shocks: What aviation managers should learn from COVID-19 for long-term planning

Erik Linden

Summary: This article provides guidance for aviation managers facing environmental shocks, advocating for strategic thinking and the development of resilient and learning organizations as preparation for future shocks. The article stresses the importance of not exaggerating short-term developments due to unproductive uncertainty and suggests introducing uncertainty as a standard factor in long-term planning.
