A hardware in the loop testbed for adaptive protection of non-inteconnected island systems with high RES penetration

George Gkiokas et al.

Summary: The energy production of island systems heavily depends on diesel generators, which are costly and environmentally polluting. Hybrid solutions, including renewable energy generators, energy storage units, and advanced control methods, can achieve high penetration of renewables in such systems. However, the replacement of synchronous generators with inverter-based resources raises concerns in the protection system, which can be addressed through adaptive protection schemes.

Coordinated Countermeasures Against Overvoltage Instability in Autonomous Power Systems

Costas D. Vournas et al.

Summary: This paper illustrates the effectiveness of proposed countermeasures against overvoltage instability in autonomous power systems, with a case study of the Greek island of Rhodes experiencing voltage/frequency problems in 2016. The suggested measures, such as automatic voltage control rules and appropriate actions during emergencies, were found to be effective in preventing similar incidents.

Analyzing Electric Vehicle Load Impact on Power Systems: Modeling Analysis and a Case Study for Maldives

Adam Suski et al.

Summary: The study explores the potential benefits of EV adoption in a small island country like the Maldives, highlighting the impact on energy generation capacity and emissions. By comparing uncoordinated and optimized charging regimes for EVs, the analysis shows that coordinated charging can significantly reduce generation capacity requirements while potentially increasing emissions due to higher diesel-based generation during off-peak hours. This emphasizes the importance of focused modeling analysis to understand the complexities of integrating EV load into a fossil-fuel dominated power system.
