Strategies for the Adoption of Hydrogen-Based Energy Storage Systems: An Exploratory Study in Australia

Cameron Wells et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the use of stationary hydrogen-based energy storage systems for microgrids and distributed energy resource systems. A study conducted in Australia based on a mixed methodology suggests that the current cost and low efficiency are the main barriers inhibiting hydrogen-based energy storage systems. Limited industry and practical experience also hinder the implementation of these systems. Government support, collaboration and knowledge sharing, as well as competition and innovation can promote the adoption of hydrogen storage systems.
