A step change towards sustainable aviation fuel from sewage sludge

Muhammad Asif Bashir et al.

Summary: Sewage sludge was successfully converted into sustainable jet fuel range hydrocarbons through pre-conditioning, thermo-catalytic reforming, and two-step hydroprocessing. The resulting hydroprocessed oil met the majority of jet fuel specifications, with some parameters falling slightly out of range. The process also produced green naphtha and diesel as by-products, and showed promising results for catalyst reusability and regeneration potential.

Upgrading biomass-derived pyrolysis bio-oil to bio-jet fuel through catalytic cracking and hydrodeoxygenation: A review of recent progress

Pooya Lahijani et al.

Summary: Biomass-to-liquid thermochemical routes, such as fast pyrolysis, are promising methods for converting waste biomass into sustainable hydrocarbon fuels. However, the bio-oil derived from pyrolysis has poor quality and requires extensive upgrading before it can be used as a jet fuel. Catalytic cracking and hydrodeoxygenation are the most promising approaches for upgrading bio-oil to bio-jet fuel. Further research is needed to understand the mechanistic aspects of raw bio-oil upgrading.

Improving carbon efficiency for an advanced Biomass-to-Liquid process using hydrogen and oxygen from electrolysis

Marcel Dossow et al.

Summary: A novel approach combining electrolysis and oxygen-blown entrained flow gasification allows for high carbon efficiency in producing sustainable Fischer-Tropsch fuels. The addition of hydrogen from electrolysis can increase product yield by a factor of 1.7-2.4. Integrating renewable power into a Biomass-to-Liquid process has the potential to increase carbon efficiency to up to 67%-97%.
