Applications, Operational Architectures and Development of Virtual Power Plants as a Strategy to Facilitate the Integration of Distributed Energy Resources

Juan C. Sarmiento-Vintimilla et al.

Summary: This article focuses on the development and scope of virtual power plants (VPPs) as a strategy to integrate distributed energy resources (DERs) into the power system. The concepts, scope, and limitations of VPPs are introduced. Smart management systems for DER integration are considered, and a bottom-up DER management scheme is proposed. The coordination of VPPs with system operators and their commercial integration in the electricity markets are analyzed. The challenges to achieving large-scale implementation of VPPs in the power system are identified and discussed.

Renewable Energy Communities as Modes of Collective Prosumership: A Multi-Disciplinary Assessment, Part I-Methodology

Shubhra Chaudhry et al.

Summary: This study proposes an integrated model to assess and compare the impact of Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) on technical, economic, and ecological aspects. By using this model, different RECs can be simulated and their results compared. Additionally, a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) is provided to interpret and compare the simulation results, as well as to understand the objectives and conflicts among stakeholders of the RECs.

Renewable Energy Communities as Modes of Collective Prosumership: A Multi-Disciplinary Assessment Part II-Case Study

Shubhra Chaudhry et al.

Summary: The study found that energy cooperatives may not be suitable for forming RECs, but innovative organizational structures like the Consumer Stock Ownership Plan may be adopted in the future. A high level of prosumership can provide technical and economic benefits, with maximum greenhouse gas savings of 35% and a maximum self-consumption share of 61% compared to no prosumership.

Robust Optimal Energy Management of a Residential Microgrid Under Uncertainties on Demand and Renewable Power Generation

Seyed Mohsen Hosseini et al.

Summary: This article introduces a novel robust framework for the day-ahead energy scheduling of a residential microgrid, addressing challenges posed by the inherent intermittency of renewable energy sources and users' behavior. The proposed method effectively minimizes energy costs while satisfying various constraints, providing a satisfactory tradeoff between users' payment and constraints' violation rate.
