Enhanced coalbed methane recovery by the modification of coal reservoir under the supercritical CO2 extraction and anaerobic digestion br

Weizhong Zhao et al.

Summary: Coal reservoir can be modified through Sc-CO2 extraction and Sc-CO2-AD treatment to enhance CBM recovery. Sc-CO2 extraction increases coal pore volume and porosity, and weakens adsorption capacity. After Sc-CO2-AD treatment, coal porosity continues to increase, permeability is improved, and adsorption capacity for methane decreases.

Diffusion of guest molecules in coal: Insights from simulation

Song Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the diffusion behaviors of CH4, CO2, N-2, H2O, and O-2 under different temperature and pressure conditions using molecular mechanics, Monte Carlo, and molecular dynamics methods. The results show that the self-diffusion and transport diffusion coefficients of different gases vary under different ensembles. The diffusion coefficient of water generally increases with temperature, while the diffusion activation energy increases with pressure.

Bridging confined phase behavior of CH4-CO2 binary systems across scales

Lingfu Liu et al.

Summary: The phase behavior of confined fluids differs significantly from bulk fluid due to the importance of fluid-wall interactions under confinement. This study examines the confined phase behavior of a CH4-CO2 binary system using Monte Carlo simulations, a cubic equation of state, and the lattice Boltzmann method. The study provides insights into the effect of confinement on density, phase distribution, and adsorption isotherms, and offers a modified equation of state for mixtures in confinement.

Influence of sequestered supercritical CO2 treatment on the pore size distribution of coal across the rank range

Kang Chen et al.

Summary: The influence of supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) fluids on coal pore structure and mineral content is significant, leading to reductions in micropore volume, increases in average pore diameter and macropore volume, as well as alterations in mineral content. The impact of SC-CO2 is related to coal rank, with the greatest effect on lignite's macropore volume and anthracite's micropore volume. Mineral dissolution may contribute to the reduction in micropores and increase in mesopores and macropores.

Insights into scale translation of methane transport in nanopores

Lingfu Liu et al.

Summary: Accurate prediction of flow behavior in shale matrix is crucial for efficient development of shale gas reservoirs due to the majority of pores being in the nano-size range. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations capture microscale physics, but their computational expense limits them to small systems. The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) bridges this gap and is used in this study to simulate methane transport in nano-size pores, incorporating force terms for adsorption effects and non-ideal fluid behavior. Parameters for optimal gas flow simulation in slit pores are determined, with results showing good agreement with MD simulations. Preconditioning schemes are proposed to improve LBM stability in complex geometries, motivating its use in scale translation of mass transport physics in permeable media.

Impacts of Long-Term Exposure to Supercritical Carbon Dioxide on Physicochemical Properties and Adsorption and Desorption Capabilities of Moisture-Equilibrated Coals

Han Zhang et al.

Summary: The long-term exposure of coal to scCO2-H2O significantly decreases mesopores in all coal types, while having minor effects on micropore surface area and volume. Additionally, the main oxygenic functional groups of coal are reduced and the Neimark fractal dimension increases after exposure, indicating increased pore surface roughness.

Application of synchrotron ATR-FTIR microspectroscopy for chemical characterization of bituminous coals treated with supercritical CO2

Guanglei Zhang et al.

Summary: Injecting CO2 into deep coal seams has the potential to sequester CO2 and enhance coalbed methane recovery. Research has shown that this process leads to chemical changes in the coal structure, increasing its aromaticity. High-volatile and low-volatile bituminous coals exhibited a significant increase in aromaticity after treatment with ScCO2.
