Comparative environmental and economic life cycle assessment of dry and wet anaerobic digestion for treating food waste and biogas digestate

Huaping Xiao et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the environmental and economic impacts of different scenarios for food waste and biogas digestate management in Shenzhen, China. The results showed that dry AD coupled with biogas digestate incineration had the best net environmental benefits, reducing 195 kg CO2 per ton of FW, and was the most economically feasible option. Dry AD scenarios exhibited better environmental benefits compared to wet AD, especially in terms of global warming, human toxicity, marine aquatic ecotoxicity, and photochemical ozone creation potential. Incineration was found to be the best post treatment option for biogas digestate.

Economic Analysis of Biogas Production via Biogas Digester Made from Composite Material

KeChrist Obileke et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the economic implications of using a biogas digester made from composite material. The findings show that using lower-cost materials increases cost effectiveness and sustainability. The economic analysis reveals an initial investment cost of USD 1623.41, with the potential to replace 33.2% of liquefied petroleum gas and generate approximately 9.42 kWh of electricity per day.

Insight into the Composition of the Stabilized Residual from a Full-Scale Mechanical-Biological Treatment (MBT) Plant in Terms of the Potential Recycling and Recovery of Its Contaminants

Katarzyna Bernat et al.

Summary: The study investigated the composition and particle size distribution of <80 mm fraction mechanically separated from residual municipal solid waste and stabilized residual after aerobic stabilization. It was found that the share of biodegradable waste decreased in the stabilized residual compared to the <80 mm fraction, with smaller particle size fractions predominating in the stabilized residual. The main contaminants in the stabilized residual were plastic, glass, metal, and other waste materials.
