Nonlinear health evaluation for lithium-ion battery within full-lifespan

Heze You et al.

Summary: Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in various fields as green batteries. Accurately evaluating and monitoring battery health is a challenge for battery technology. This paper proposes a new health evaluation indicator called state of nonlinear aging (SoNA) and designs corresponding methods and systems to fill the gap in health evaluation of nonlinear aging in lithium-ion batteries.

A mechanistic calendar aging model of lithium-ion battery considering solid electrolyte interface growth

Wenkuan Zhu et al.

Summary: This study establishes a mechanistic calendar aging model of lithium-ion battery considering solid electrolyte interface growth. The model can simulate the battery capacity degradation and the evolution of battery charging voltage profiles, and capture the internal degradation of the electrodes during the aging process. Modeling analysis is conducted to find possible solutions to mitigate the calendar aging process of lithium-ion battery.

Investigating carbon footprint and carbon reduction potential using a cradle-to-cradle LCA approach on lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles in China

Quanwei Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the carbon footprint of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) produced in China using a cradle-to-cradle life-cycle assessment approach. The results show that battery production and use are the main sources of carbon emissions, with hydrometallurgy being the method with the lowest carbon emission for recycling. Battery remanufacturing through recycled materials can significantly reduce carbon emissions. The future electricity mix will greatly impact the carbon emissions of battery production. Short-term carbon reduction measures include battery recycling, while the long-term measure is greening the electricity sector.

Foreign matter defect battery and sudden spontaneous combustion

Xiangdong Kong et al.

Summary: Many batteries of electric vehicles and energy storage power stations around the world have experienced sudden spontaneous combustion accidents under normal use. The presence of foreign matter mixed into the battery during the manufacturing process is found to be one of the main causes. By intentionally creating defective batteries, conducting aging experiments, and analyzing different stages, the evolution mechanism of foreign matter defects in the battery is revealed, reproducing the self-induced internal short-circuiting and sudden spontaneous combustion of the battery under non-abuse conditions. Although the evolution of foreign matter defects is uncertain and sporadic, some clues for battery safety warning can still be found from the external characteristic data of the battery. The research results of this paper are helpful in understanding the actual mechanism of sudden spontaneous combustion in batteries and improving battery safety and manufacturing.

Critical review of life cycle assessment of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles: A lifespan perspective

Xin Lai et al.

Summary: This study reviews the framework and methods of life cycle assessment (LCA) and evaluates the entire lifespan of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The results show that battery production significantly impacts the environment and resources, while battery materials recycling and remanufacturing have considerable environmental and economic values. Moreover, greening of electricity is critical to reducing carbon emissions during the battery life cycle.
