Rational highly dispersed ruthenium for reductive catalytic fractionation of lignocellulose

Zhenzhen Liu et al.

Summary: Producing monomeric phenols from lignin biopolymer depolymerization in a detachable and efficient manner has attracted significant attention for the fullest utilization of sustainable lignocellulosic biomass. In this study, a low-loaded and highly dispersed Ru anchored on a chitosan-derived N-doped carbon catalyst (RuN/ZnO/C) is reported. This catalyst exhibits outstanding performance in the reductive catalytic fractionation of lignocellulose, achieving nearly theoretical maximum yields of phenolic monomers from lignin. The selectivity towards propyl end-chained guaiacol and syringol allows for easy purification, and the process leaves high retention of (hemi)cellulose for enzymatic hydrolysis. The good stability and transformation of Ru species contribute to the effectiveness of the catalyst. Time-course experiments and reactivity screening shed light on the mechanism. Overall, this work opens up new possibilities for the valorization of lignin and the economic feasibility of lignocellulosic biomass.

Catalyst choice impacts aromatic monomer yields and selectivity in hydrogen-free reductive catalytic fractionation

Jacob K. Kenny et al.

Summary: Hydrogen-free reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF) is a promising method to extract and depolymerize lignin from native biomass. Pt/C and Pd/C achieve comparable monomer yields regardless of hydrogen pressure, while Ru/C and Ni/C show lower yields under H-2-free conditions. Pt/C and Pd/C can form ethyl and propanol products through dehydrogenation and hydrogenation reactions. Adding water increases the selectivity of propyl products. Similar trends in yield and selectivity are observed for poplar RCF and reactions with coniferyl alcohol, indicating the importance of stabilization rate of reactive monomer intermediates in H-2-free RCF.

Catalytic hydrogenolysis of lignin in ethanol/isopropanol over an activated carbon supported nickel-copper catalyst

Chongbo Cheng et al.

Summary: In this study, catalytic hydrogenolysis of organosolv poplar lignin was conducted using NiCu/C catalysts in ethanol/isopropanol solvent, achieving high yields of phenolic monomers. The introduction of Cu in catalysts promoted the hydrogen donor process of the solvent and facilitated the cleavage of lignin linkages, resulting in decreased molecular weight of bio-oil. The possible lignin dimer type structures were proposed and identified by MALDI-TOF MS, providing a better understanding of NiCu/C catalyzed lignin depolymerization.

Summary: This study presents reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF) of flax shive in ethanol and isopropanol using a bifunctional catalyst (Ru/C) and molecular hydrogen at elevated temperatures, resulting in solvolytic depolymerization of lignin and hemicelluloses. The catalytic hydrogenation effectively stabilizes lignin intermediates, preventing repolymerization reactions and producing a lignin fraction with high depolymerization degree. Bifunctional catalysts Ru/C significantly increase the conversion and yield of monophenolic compounds in the hydrogenation of flax shive.
