High-Efficiency Ternary Organic Solar Cells with a Good Figure-of-Merit Enabled by Two Low-Cost Donor Polymers

Ruijie Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, we fabricated ternary organic solar cells with high efficiency and decent performance by combining two donor polymers using a simple synthesis method. Our results indicate that the optimal morphology of the ternary blend is achieved through the coupling and competition between PTQ10 and PTVT-T, leading to efficient charge transport and suppressed bimolecular recombination. Furthermore, the optimized solvent-vapor-assisted casting method improved the efficiency of the optimal system to 19.11%.

Realizing the efficiency-stability balance for all-polymer photovoltaic blends

Shangfei Yao et al.

Summary: Although the power conversion efficiency of organic solar cells (OSCs) has reached over 19%, stability remains a challenge. This study reports two types of all-polymer blends, one of which has lower efficiency but better stability and thermal stability, resulting in higher power output over a month. The existence of chemical bonding in this all-polymer blend enables stable phase separation, while excessive phase segregation in the other blend significantly undermines the device performance.

Geophysical constraints on the reliability of solar and wind power worldwide

Dan Tong et al.

Summary: Solar and wind resources can satisfy most countries' electricity demand, but hundreds of hours of unmet demand may still occur annually. Even in systems that meet more than 90% of demand, there is still a possibility of unmet demand for hundreds of hours each year.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of a Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) Plant in Tower Configuration with and without Thermal Energy Storage (TES)

Gemma Gasa et al.

Summary: This study conducted a life cycle assessment of a CSP tower plant with molten salts storage and compared it with a reference CSP plant without storage. The plant with storage showed lower environmental impact, with the solar field and storage system having the highest impact. The study highlights the importance of storage in reducing the environmental impact of CSP plants.

Cost-Benefit Analysis of Solar Thermal Plants with Storage in a Hydrothermal System

Cibelle Pereira Trama et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the economic benefits of CSP plants with TES systems in a hydrothermal system, showing that their costs can be reduced by at least 37% by considering their benefits to the system. The use of net cost is proposed for appropriate comparison among energy sources.

Economic-environmental evaluation and multi-objective optimization of supercritical CO2 based-central tower concentrated solar power system with thermal storage

Yingzong Liang et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the optimal design of a CSP system combined with a supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle and thermal storage, considering economic and environmental objectives. A multi-objective MINLP model is developed to find a balanced solution that achieves both economic and environmental goals.

Life cycle-based sustainability indicators for electricity generation: A systematic review and a proposal for assessments in Brazil

Joao Gabriel Lassio et al.

Summary: This study focuses on formulating a set of indicators to incorporate sustainability into the decision-making process concerning electricity generation in Brazil. Through a systematic review of scientific papers, a set of 28 indicators (including 18 environmental, 4 social, and 6 economic indicators) was established. The research shows that LCSA practitioners have encountered various levels of methodological and practical challenges in energy development, which is reflected in the number of environmental, social, and economic indicators collected from the overall sample.
