Examining the Performance of Implantable-Grade Lithium-Ion Cells after Overdischarge and Thermally Accelerated Aging

Jonathon R. Harding et al.

Summary: This study examines the performance of two commercial lithium-ion cells under different conditions. The results show that the graphite-based cells exhibit significant performance decline and aging, while the LTO-based cells are more tolerant of abuse and show minimal changes in performance.

Combinatorial methods in advanced battery materials design

Eric McCalla et al.

Summary: In the search for better battery materials, experimental combinatorial science can play a crucial role in accelerating the development of advanced materials. A high-throughput synthesis platform at McGill University has been used to study Li-ion and Na-ion cathodes, anodes, and solid electrolytes. The results from this system accurately reproduce the data from literature, indicating its scalability and accuracy.

Suite of High-Throughput Experiments for Screening Solid Electrolytes for Li Batteries

Antranik Jonderian et al.

Summary: All-solid lithium batteries are crucial for safer and longer-lasting batteries. Previous research on solid electrolytes has mainly focused on room temperature ionic conductivities, which is insufficient to ensure the functionality of solid-state batteries. This study introduces a high-throughput method that can synthesize 64 samples simultaneously and evaluate key properties of candidate solid electrolytes.

Freestanding niobium pentoxide-decorated multiwalled carbon nanotube electrode: Charge storage mechanism in sodium-ion pseudocapacitor and battery

Carla G. Real et al.

Summary: This study investigated the application and energy storage mechanism of a flexible, freestanding niobium pentoxide decorated multiwalled carbon nanotube electrode material in a sodium-ion pseudocapacitor. The findings revealed the enhanced performance of the material in terms of capacitance, power density, and energy density, bridging the gap between supercapacitors and batteries.

High-throughput design of Na-Fe-Mn-O cathodes for Na-ion batteries

Shipeng Jia et al.

Summary: Na-ion batteries are considered environmentally favorable alternatives to Li-ion batteries, and research has found that in Na-Fe-Mn-O materials, the under-studied P3 and Mn-rich P2 regions show the best stability in air. High-throughput methods were used to systematically screen the pseudo-ternary system and identify over 50 single-phase materials of potential interest for battery applications.

Li4Ti5O12 spinel anodes

Michael M. Thackeray et al.

Summary: Li4Ti5O12 spinel was originally studied as a cathode material for rechargeable lithium batteries, but later found success as an anode in the lithium-ion battery industry, offering safe, high-power cells with lower energy density compared to those with graphite/carbon anodes.

High Rate Lithium Ion Battery with Niobium Tungsten Oxide Anode

Yumi Kim et al.

Summary: Highly stable lithium-ion battery cycling is demonstrated with niobium tungsten oxide (NWO) in full cells using LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 (NMC-622) and LiFePO4 (LFP) as cathode materials. The cells show high rate performance and long-term stability under 5 C and 10 C cycling rates. The degradation of the cell performance is attributed to increased charge transfer resistance at the NMC side, while NWO shows structural stability and minimal electrolyte decomposition during cycling.
