Effect of Microvascular Invasion Risk on Early Recurrence of Hepatocellular Carcinoma After Surgery and Radiofrequency Ablation

Sunyoung Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, surgical resection (SR) was found to be associated with a lower rate of early recurrence compared to radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) based on the risk of microvascular invasion (MVI). The predictive model developed in the study accurately predicted the risk of MVI in HCC patients with high accuracy, indicating that patients with MVI who underwent RFA were more prone to recurrence than those who underwent SR.

Repeat hepatectomy for patients with early and late recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma: A multicenter propensity score matching analysis

Hao Xing et al.

Summary: The study showed that patients who underwent repeat hepatectomy for early recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma had worse overall survival and disease-free survival compared to those with late recurrence. These findings can provide guidance for physicians in selecting patients for repeat hepatectomy.

Epidemiology of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Katherine A. McGlynn et al.

Summary: Liver cancer, particularly hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), is a major global health concern. While HBV and HCV remain important risk factors for HCC, efforts in vaccination and treatment are showing promise. However, the increasing prevalence of metabolic risk factors like obesity and diabetes, as well as other factors like excessive alcohol consumption, present ongoing challenges in the prevention of liver cancer.

Liver Resection Versus Local Ablation Therapies for Hepatocellular Carcinoma Within the Milan Criteria A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Seong Wook Shin et al.

Summary: This study found that liver resection (LR) is more effective than local ablation therapies (such as RFA, MWA, and RFA plus TACE) in treating HCC within the Milan criteria. Specifically, LR has better 5-year recurrence-free survival and lower local recurrence rates compared to local ablation therapies.

Liver resection versus radiofrequency ablation for recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Yao Yang et al.

Summary: Through comparing the efficacy and safety of LR and RFA for recurrent HCC, LR showed significantly better overall survival compared to RFA, especially in 2-, 3-, and 4-year survival rates. While there was no significant difference in disease-free survival between LR and RFA during the whole follow-up period, LR had higher 2- to 5-year DFS rates. Additionally, LR was associated with more major complications and longer hospital stay.
