Effects of single and combined exposure to lead and stress during pregnancy on offspring neurodevelopment

Summary: This study found that both single and combined prenatal exposures to lead/stress impaired infant neurodevelopment, and the effects of combined exposure may be more profound than single exposures. Combined exposure in early pregnancy may be associated with worse neurodevelopmental outcomes than combined exposure around birth, especially in social-emotional development.

Association between prenatal exposure to persistent organic pollutants and neurodevelopment in early life: A mother-child cohort (Shanghai, China)

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between prenatal exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and neurodevelopment in 18-month-old toddlers in Shanghai, China. The study found that beta-HCH concentration in cord serum was negatively related to motor development scores at 18 months, while p,p'-DDE was positively associated with language development. However, prenatal HCB levels were not linked to any of the Bayley-III subscales at 18 months.

Prenatal lead exposure and cord blood DNA methylation in the Korean Exposome Study

Summary: Prenatal lead exposure was found to be associated with altered, gender-specific patterns of DNA methylation in Korean infants. In males, maternal blood lead level during early pregnancy was linked to 18 CpG sites, while a CpG site near the NBAS gene was associated during late pregnancy. No significant association was observed in females.
