What can we learn from studying plastic debris in the Sea Scheldt estuary?

Milica Velimirovic et al.

Summary: The Sea Scheldt estuary has been identified as an important pathway for plastic debris to enter the North Sea. This study analyzed the abundance and composition of plastic debris collected from the Scheldt River in Belgium. Foils were the most common form of plastic debris, and polypropylene, polyethylene, and polystyrene were the predominant types of polymers. The study also investigated the mineral elements present in the plastic debris, which mainly originated from flame retardants, mineral fillers, and catalysts used in plastic production. Machine learning algorithms were used to identify different types of plastic based on their elemental composition.

Effects of exposure of polyethylene microplastics to air, water and soil on their adsorption behaviors for copper and tetracycline

Yuan Wang et al.

Summary: The adsorption behaviors of Cu(II) and tetracycline (TC) on polyethylene microplastics exposed to different environments varied, with marine- and soil-exposed microplastics showing higher adsorption and stabilization capacities. The adsorption isotherms were better described by Langmuir model for water- and soil-exposed microplastics, while kinetic experiments revealed differing intra-particle diffusion effects. Additionally, the glycosyl composition and density functional theory analysis suggested that biofilm components and metal-antibiotic complexes played a role in the adsorption process.

Prevalence and hazardous impact of pharmaceutical and personal care products and antibiotics in environment: A review on emerging contaminants

Preeti Chaturvedi et al.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance is a global health emergency caused by the unrestrained use of pharmaceutical and personal care products. The presence of various organic compounds in the environment, including antibiotics and antimicrobial agents, poses serious health risks to humans. Research needs to focus on discussing the sources of antibiotic resistance and the ecotoxicity risks in the environment.

Review of the artificially-accelerated aging technology and ecological risk of microplastics

Peng Liu et al.

Summary: Laboratory technologies can artificially control aging conditions and save labor and time costs, but they cannot fully simulate the complex aging processes in the environment. The potential impacts of aging process on the risks of MPs are seemingly enhanced, including physical injury, combined toxicity with external pollutants, and chemical risk of additives and low-molecular products.

Microplastics act as an important protective umbrella for bacteria during water/wastewater disinfection

Maocai Shen et al.

Summary: This study found that the presence of microplastics significantly reduces the efficiency of ultraviolet and chlorine disinfection in water/wastewater treatment, and the efficiency decreases with the increase of microplastics concentration or the decrease of disinfectant dosage.
